    How would Liston's reign go?

Assuming there was no rematch, Liston probably would have had to take a dive to some other long outsider, sooner rather than later.

Touche. I reckon he'd reign supreme for a sustained period, boxing corruption not withstanding (and no Ali rematch)

He loses in his next defence, to George Chuvalo.

    why is that?
Liston would beat chuvalo.. his jab and power would be the deciding factor, because all chuvalo has is a damn good chin.. chuvalo is exactly the kind of fighter that liston would want to fight, one that walks right into his jab.
liston takes a ud over chuvalo or a stoppage on cuts..

Yeah. As much as I liked Sonny, I don't think his title reign would have been long, even if Muhammad Ali had never been born.

He could have won had Ali/Clay quit before the start of the 5th as he almost did. Liston may have made a couple of more defenses, but his reign might have ended at the hands of someone like Ernie Terrell, his former sparring partner, much like Leotis Martin was. Liston was no longer at his best and a guy like Terrell could have taken him into the late rounds, with Liston fading though not necessarily being stopped as Terrell was not a big puncher.

If Liston had been good enough to have beaten Ali,he'd have probably held the title for another four years, until he fought Joe Frazier or Jimmy Ellis.

Someone would've gotten him, Ellis, Frazier, maybe Bonavena.
