Would he still be considered one of the greatest heavys of all-time? I think the undefeated record causes people to overrate rocky. At the same time, Marciano was incredible when he was down and had to pull fights out. At 49-0, I still have trouble putting him in my top 10 heavys of all-time.

I think his 49-0 helps a lot, but at 49-1 I think he would still be a top 10 all time heavyweight.

Nothing would be different. Having only one loss is magnificent.

Then who ever beat him would be rated a lot higher, and marciano would be given more credit for beating this guy in the rematch.

Marciano would be sure to quite literally beat them to a disfigured pulp in the rematch. :!:

    I don't think he'd even be considered a top 20 heavyweight

I suppose it depends on who, when, and how he was defeated. If he came back a few years after retirement to take on Patterson and lost a close Sd we wouldnt bat an eyelid. But if he was beat in his title reign to say an ageing Joey Maxim by KO then he would plummet down our rankings.

I think we do get carried away with giving Rocky credit for being
undefeated. But it is a significant achievement. We just have to be careful that we balance it with his quality of opposition. The grey area is how much praise we give him for ability in accordance with his dispalys against said opposition.

Even with one lost, Marciano still clean out his era. So he still gets a high ranking in that regard.

Dempsey, Louis, Ali, Tyson, all rule there era's with iron fist and are ranked pretty high by most. And they have lost. I dont see a reason to drop Marciano out of the top ten with a lost.

...if he had been 49-1 he would be just a smidgen less over rated than he is now.

It depends who beat him. Many thought Lastarza won the first match, and a news paper says Lowry beat him in their first match. Much of Marciano's historical standing is being 49-0. If he was 49-1, he would slide down the rankings. No one doubts Rocky earned his title as champion. Rocky pretty much fought the best out there in his title matches.

I think that 49-0 makes Marciano special. He didn't fought the best competition ever, he isn't big h2h threat. If Rocky would be 49-1 I don't think that he would be in my top 10. His legacy boosts his rating.

I don't thi9nk that it would make much difference to his legacy. Maybe one or two positions on the all time great ladder, but no more.

Well, imagine Holmes 50-0 and you will see how it boosts his legacy
