I don't need to tell you that the marvelous one kept the title locked down for a long time, or that some strong middleweight contenders emerged during that period. So what if we take him out of the picture? What direction does the title take, and what new champions are created?
Many scenarios with this. Alan Minter may have held the title a bit longer and there's a great possibility that Tony Sibson would have won the crown. Mustafa Hamsho would have been in the mix too and,of course,Thomas Hearns would have been Middleweight champ earlier than he actually was. Same with Roberto Duran.
I believe Herol Graham might be one of the more marketable guys? Was he? It’s an impression for me, do you think he fights for the title or meets against say Leonard? Or Hearns? Did he have that sort of pull?
There is no doubt that Fully Obel would have been his first defense. He was forced down the throat of Hagler and there is no doubt that it would have been the same. So how would Alan fare against the long angular arms of the Venezuelan?
Thanks for this; now I’ll never be able to see or hear “ long arm of the law” without now muttering “Venezuelan” under my breath.
Mustafa Hamsho, Fully Obel, Tony Sibson, Juan Roldan, Duran , Hearns and Mugabi were all good enough to win at least a version of the middleweight title. They wouldn't dominate like Hagler did. A lot of very good to great action fights . Actually Hagler was the last truly dominant Middleweight champion.
No Marvin in the scenario and Duran and Tommy are the clear main beneficiaries. I would definitively add Mugabi becoming a MW champion. Hamsho probably too. The others are more a question mark; nobody knows per sure, but without Marvin around it is an open field.
Hamsho and Hearns would have been the most dominant players IMO. Without the Hagler war Hearns would have been fresher and more potent and for a decent period. He also would have chased the title there quite a bit earlier. The biggest thing tho, is we would have seen SRL take a tilt at the title earlier. Much earlier. Would Benitez have popped up a touch earlier as well? So for me SRL, Hearns and probably Benitez all have a crack earlier. Antuofermo might have got a bit more out of himself as well.
We very well could have seen Donald Curry moving up and winning a version of a title. Especially with Arum behind him. Changes things when there are multiple options to become champ as opposed to having to go through a Marvin Hagler to become the champion.
Also think a grand total of what---3 successful title defenses by any one guy? Sure don't think we see 5 defenses being made--all these guys had flaws that could be exploited. So a revolving door.
I just wonder 1 thing:can Vito Antuofermo regain his title with the mix? Because I don't like his chances vs Hamsho where the headbutts/fpuls could possibly cut him bad.
Yes I think that potentially he did. A fight could have been set up in the UK around 1987 if the incumbent's team had wanted it.
