What if Marvin Hagler had gotten a title shot in 1977?

I can't say that I've seen anyone, outside of the two Judges, the AP and maybe an apprentice writer for 'Horse & Hound' Magazine, on the night, give a card in favor of Vito.

In retrospect and most commonly, I see scores of 145-140 for Hagler being arrived at.

Don't forget only one judge scored it for Vito. The others scored it a draw and 145-141 Hagler. 145-140 is a very common mark. Vito's wife scored it even.

God i wish i could find it but i read a great story in one of my old mags where one of the top writers sat down with Vito and his wife (i think it was) and watched the fight. He described the whole affair and it was a good read. I like Vito he was a good honest toiler of a very decent level.

You could apply the " What if " to Greb ! suppose he got a title shot in 1915 ( he was fighting the like of Tom Gibbons and George Chip in that year ) pretty sure he would have taken Al Mcoy ( The cheese champion ) fairly easy No ? so in effect, could have reigned for 11 years.

I count the 'Draw' card, as 'in favor' of Vito. ;)

Whilst I can appreciate Antuofermo's toughness (he was, simply put, as hard as a coffin nail) and did do well to push through to the end of that bout, it isn't like it was a fight of two halves. Hagler had the best of it, throughout.

To the best of my knowledge, Vito still claims he beat Hagler. If you ever do find that interview with Vito and his Wife, I'd be very interested to see it.

Well put that way a draw card does indeed favor the champion doesn't it.

For sure mate i'd love to come across it.

I wouldnt say he was green. He had trouble with slick boxers like he did later. Monroe was very slick. Valdez was not. Haglet beats Valdez but would lose to Monzon in '77.

He also come a decent ways quite fast after Monroe loss. Well including it too as he learned a lot that night. He beat Monroe less than 12 months later at the start of 77 and did it again later on in 77 as well. Monroe from all accounts was rather special that first outing. Would kill to see that one.

With this timeline, maybe he kayoes Duran, and brutalizes Hearns a bit earlier. And beats Leonard.

Is this Monzon or Valdez? He would lose a decision to Monzon but UD Valdez.

It would be reasonable to imagine events being naturally stepped up. Hagler might well have sought retirement earlier and so Leonard's window of opportunity would be much tighter - unless he decided to make the move up to 160 in the early 80s, instead of going into retirement.

I don't think the bout would have actually come off in that new timeline.

The Hearns bout could have happened sooner, given they had been suppose to fight earlier than when their eventual match occurred (in 82 - I think? - Or, somewhere around that timeframe).

The Duran bout is unlikely to have occurred earlier, due to Duran's need to rehabilitate, post-New Orleans. That bout might even have happened later, depending on what else had been kicked up in the dust.
