If somehow he beat Buster he would've lost to evander holyfield in his very next fight and likely by knockout. The Douglas fight showed that Mike didn't have the necessary skills anymore to beat a brave world class fighter.
I agree. Tyson's life outside the ring at that point would have still hindered his commitment to boxing. He would have lost to some lesser fighter eventually anyway, imo. The man was one of the very best ever when he had it all together.
there are several ways to look at it. it all depends how mike would have beat him. if he devastates the douglas that showed up, his first fight with evander would have been a pick'em affair in the early 90's that most probably would have leaned toward mike winning in that era. now say douglas didn't get up from that count he took, and he wouldn't have stormed back to ko mike, then I still think it would have represented a slow decline in mike from even before that fight, and evander may have beaten him when they finally stepped in the ring in 90 or 91. the fact that we still talk about this shows how legendary both evander and mike happen to be, regardless of mikes out of the ring transgressions and evander's flirtation with brain damage/punch drunkenness, you name it.
Tough to say, really. Tyson had been declining and eventually someone would have picked him off. The big "if" is "if" his management team had never changed. He could have gone on to be the greatest. Maybe.
I really dont understand why the ref didnt count out Douglas? Then turn and count out Tyson for the same count?
