That would be awesome at 160, granted pav needs a new trainer and some tweaks , but i feel it would be a great fight , im sure he would come back lookin for blood , williams well hes all out puching machine , then the winner fights martinez for 160 belts, hmmm thoughts
I'm now convinced that Pavlik gets his ass handed directly to him by Williams. I don't see him taking that fight right away.
Right fight at the wrong time, I personally think pavlick could win a fight with williams but not right now, he needs to build up that confidence first, u kant beat paul williams if you believe your not better then the guy williams just beat
Dont think he could have won it. But perhaps a bad move from a management point of view on his part, a Williams fight would have been a genuine superfight and made him probably double the money than the Martinez fight, possibly more depending on whether, it would PPV.(as I suspect)
Regardless of what Martinez did/will do to Pavlik, Williams will always be a much easier (i.e. winnable) fight for him.
I doubt Williams is interested anymore. It's a shame because that really seems to be the only significant and winnable fight out there for KP at 160. Maybe Sturm, but he'd have to travel to Germany for that, and I doubt Felix would be interested in risking his belt, even after the Martinez fight. I still say a move to 168 and a fight against Manfredo/Brinkley/Bika or some equivalent B-level Super-Middy is probably the best move for him. I doubt HBO would be interested in any of them, but you have to start over somewhere.
How quickly things change. I still remember first seeing Pavlik when he fought Bronco McKart. I liked Bronco and knew very little about Pavlik. But Pavlik just put a beating on him. Saw the fight with Pierre but didn't think too much about it - considering what Duddy had just done to Pierre. Then his fight with Miranda in which I thought this was just a stepping stone for Miranda. Get a pelt of an undefeated boxer under your belt before you take on Jermaine Taylor. Pavlik takes everything Miranda had to offer and just kept coming. Thankfully the ref was Smoger, because what was a great beating could have been stopped much sooner. Pavlik establishes himself as a genuine tough guy. But probably not skilled enough to beat Jermaine Taylor. One knockdown almost served to reinforce the thought most probably had on Pavlik: tough guy, but no world beater. Certainly not able enough to really contend with a guy like Taylor. But we all know what happened. Little over 2 years later and the whole perspective changes.
The best thing for Pavlik, the division, and for boxing in general would be for Pavlik to win a Martinez rematch. That would set up the following fights: People would be screaming for Pavlik/Martinez III People would be screaming for Pavlik/Williams even louder than they have in the past. People would still want to see Williams/Martinez II. If Williams beat Martinez a 2nd time, everyone would want Pavlik/Williams II. This **** could go on for a couple years.
People say PW is susceptible, but what they forget is that PW can fight a boxer's fight against a puncher, like he did it against disgraced Margarito. Now, Pavlik has good defense. I was actually impressed by his defense in the Martinez fight. But when facing PW... being stationary like that will not get you anywhere. PW, with his big reach would have an easier task than Martinez of keeping the fight at distance. He'd outbox Pavlik. And he'd do quite some damage, as the Williams of present sits on his punches more.
