What if Rahman would have defended against Tyson instead of the Lewis rematch?

Just how hard did he train for the golota fight?

We saw 2 rounds, how would his conditioning have held up past the 4th?

I think it's naive to dismiss the possibility that rahman would have beaten tyson in 01.

But if you believe the only thing stopping tyson becoming a 3 time world champion was matchmaking than that's fine.

I see nothing on film to convince me he'd beat rahman that year. Your argument isn't convincing enough to sway me neither, maybe you don't truly believe it yourself?

Maybe you're basing this on some half baked boxrec analysis.

Tyson didn't look particularly good in 2001. He didn't look particularly good against lewis in 2002.

 

Literally, there were only 2 of 58 fights in which Tyson looked worse than against Brian "Beer & Donuts" Nielsen.

He was a decomposing zombie. :verysad

 

Maybe he wouldn't and it's hard to say how successful he'd be had he trained hard and got the fight signed and been in the correct mental state.

If it goes past 4 I don't think mike you be fit enough to survive rahman's shots. Ofcourse there's the chance tyson finishes him before then, I just make it less than even.

 

It would have been a good fight. Tyson's trainer Tommy Brooks knew Rahman and Im sure he would have made sure Tyson was ready for him.

Think about it. there was an interesting article which I found with a quick seach where Tyson was thinking he was going to get Rahman that he said the fight with Lewis was never really realistic. Almost admitting he wasnt ever going to be ready or had any desire to fight him. Tyson had a chance to regain the title for the 3rd time against a guy who he felt he could beat. I think he would have showed up.

Tyson lines up Rahman fight

Mike Tyson has declared his intention to scrap his proposed fight with David Izon on June 2 in order to pursue a crack at newly-crowned WBC and IBF heavyweight title holder Hasim Rahman.
Lennox Lewis wisely ensured a rematch clause was inserted into Rahman's contract before Sunday morning's loss to the American in South Africa.
And his advisers were in bullish mood yesterday, suggesting they had secured a date of August 18 for a second meeting.
However, Rahman's promoter Cedric Kushner rubbished that particular claim, saying his camp had not been consulted over the date and made no secret of the fact that his man could seek a mandatory defence first.
The obvious choice for that bout would be a lucrative showdown with the WBC's number one contender Tyson, and 'Iron Mike' himself is growing in confidence that he could soon be back on top of the world.
When asked about the Izon clash, Tyson told ESPN.com: "I don't think that fight's going to happen.
"I want to fight Rahman for the title. I'm going to be champion of the world again."
Tyson also revealed that he never regarded a clash with Lewis as a possibility, despite all the hype leading up to Lennox's loss to Rahman.
"I never saw the Lennox Lewis fight materialising, that was never realistic to me," added Tyson.
"People always talked about it, but I never thought about fighting him. I talked a lot of talk and just played the part, but it was never realistic to me."
Rahman last night brushed off a minor road accident in his home city of Baltimore.
"People make mistakes, I don't think accidents happen on purpose, I don't think there was any intention - it was an accident," said the champion, who was thrown out of a convertible car along with his wife and two children after it struck a taxi.
"My family's okay and I'm feeling excellent and am ready to talk about the next fight. Let's go, let's get something ready."
Another complication is that Lewis is sidelined by a 90-day suspension - imposed by the South African Boxing Commission but recognised worldwide - for his knockout, making August the earliest possible time he can climb back into the ring again.
Rahman will plan to get back in action sooner.
"He (Hasim) is entitled to an interim fight and I am positively exploring that interim fight," Kushner told BBC Radio 5 Live.
"It (the next fight) could very well be (against Lewis), however we are exploring some other names and one of them is obviously Mike Tyson."

 

it would be a good fight, I agree. I think Tyson goes balls to the wall, hurts rocky, rocky survives, tyson gasses and rocky brutalises him in the sixth.

FOTY candidate.

Maybe with more confidence and two great scalps behind him he'd have had more ocnfidence fighting holy, that fight intrigues me more tbh.

 

You making quite a leap of faith to think he could, nevermind would, train himself into good shape in 2001.
All I remember is he was an emotional mess and a almost complete shot fighter in 2001, the last fighter I'd ever put much faith in to come good once more.
When they're gone, they are gone.

Besides that, this Golota fight myth is out of hand anyway. Golota was a bigger emotional mess than Tyson, and just stood there throwing pitty-pat punches, afraid from the opening bell, and he quit. He resigned himself to be the punching bag for that fight. There was no vintage Tyson in there that night.

 

He was in good shape for five previous fights. He was supposed to fight again in June against Izon.
Your the one really making a leap of faith saying Golota fought scared the entire fight. He actually made a decent account for himself in the opening rounds which were pretty fast paced.

Noone said it was vintage Tyson but Golota gave it go for a couple rounds and took some serious punishment.

Let me ask you. Do you think Bruno and Seldon fought with more guts than Golota?
