As we all know, Roy Jones Junior made history in March of 2003 when he jumped from LHW to HW to defeat John Ruiz for the WBA HW Title to become the first MW Champ in a good century to defeat a HW Champion....a great achievement for sure, regardless of the calibre of opponent. There suddenly appeared a great number of possibilities: Did RJJ the P4P#1 take on Lennox Lewis the 'man' in the division in a improbable yet lucrative David versus Giant contest? Should take on another small HW in Chris Byrd and try to add another belt to his collection? How about a fight with the new WBO Champ Corrie Sanders who was hot following his win over heir apparent Wladimir Klitschko? What about a fight with WBA mandatory Vitali Klitschko? An option perhaps to safeguard his title? And of course, the biggest money spinner of all, how about a fight with the faded great, Iron Mike Tyson....a PPV blockbuster if ever there was one.... We all know these possibilities existed, but RJJ never took them up and instead made the illadvised decision to burn off a good 25 pounds of muscle to return to LHW....he has never been the same since. So what I ask you guys is what do you think would have happened had RJJ decided to stay at HW? 1. Who would he have fought? 2. How would he have fared? 3. Would he have remained 'Superman Roy' for a little longer? Your feedback on this matter would be much appreciated.
he would have gotten a dangerous beating off lewis, klitchskos or any HW who could bang. even mentioning him being in the same ring as lewis is a joke. he would have been carried out ,anyone who says different is an idiot. this is why i dont consider jones to have been the heavyweight champion, the way he won it was opportunistic at best, run up, fight the smallest and worst boxer to hold a belt and then run back twice as fast.
Some one who dodged his manditory Tua was not very sure of himself...dodged Vitili too. Byrd was more trouble than he was worth at 50%. Tyson might have showed up in shape... I was surprised he didn't want to fight Holy...
byrd was possibly the most likely fighter he'd have beaten there. due to their somewhat similar sizes. a very faded tyson of the etienne win would be 60/40 jones imo. tyson would be very dangerous for 2-3 rounds and could possible KO jones with a single punch in that 9 minutes. past that, tyson probably gets frustrated. i think he can beat rahman whose always been mediocre. he can pot shot 'ol rock to death and rahman coukd'nt do anything about it. he beats a shot holy too, who lost to toney the following year. holy too sluggish. toney was still a cruiser at this point, but jones would probably do the same to him, like he did in '94. rjj would get wrecked by super hvy's. lennox, vitali and wlad knock him out. i'd favor corrie sanders too for being a south paw with quick hands. tua could probably still go the 12 at this point and maintain decent activity, he'd have a good chance too. thinking back, there were quite a few hvy's he'd have beaten. would have been better for his career imo had he stayed there.
jesus if he'd signed to fight tyson believing he was washed up then tyson turned up in shape and motivated, imagine roys face.
l like this post, and agree with most of what you're saying. I think Jones would have been wise to stay the heck away from the super HW's such as the Klitschko bros and of course Lennox, but there was talk of the latter taking place for silly money I believe... The Tyson fight would have been interesting I feel, and it was one that I wanted as a Tyson fan at the time as I was very much of the opinion that he could win it and be the first man to defeat RJJ albeit, at HW. It would have been a huge money spinner for Mikey too, which would have been welcome given his financial woes. I would still have favoured Jones 60-40 at that point. I think Jones could have potentially beaten the likes of Rahman, Tua(though that would be a dangerous fight), Tyson, Holyfield and Byrd too. Toney would also have been intriguing if he decided to go that route when James made the move up. I feel wins like this would have added hugely to his legacy, and defeats wouldn't have been catastrophic either as they would have occured well beyond his natural weight class. I don't think Jones should have returned to LHW, that was a huge mistake imo. He should have remained at HW or else made the move to CW....by his mid 30s his body was ill equipped to deal with such rapid weight loss and so it has proved.
If he had stuck to smaller HW's only, like Byrd he would have fared well and increased his status. I honestly think he should have hand picked a couple of low risk defences of his WBA belt and then retired. He had would have been very badly hurt by a bigger HW. Sanders, Klitschko and even Tyson would need to be avoided IMO.
I agree with this for the most part, the move back to LHW really does seem illogical in hindsight: all risk with very little reward by comparison to staying at HW legacy wise. Cruiserweight also had some interesting possibilties, a rematch with a rejuvenated Toney following his huge win over Jirov for one...we all know that many Toney fans assert that Jones win is tainted due to the chronic weight loss that Toney underwent in the build up to that fight. I would have liked Jones to have taken on the following: Toney: Jones weighed 193 I believe against Ruiz, a fight with Toney could have taken place. Great grudge match between two of the finest fighters of this era. Byrd - Grab another belt and defeat a very tricky, crafty, highly rated fighter in the process. Rahman - Defeat a former lineal challenger. RJJ was capable of doing it. Tyson - Huge money spinner, would get credit rightly or wrongly if he did manage to defeat Tyson.
in hind sight, it was an odd decision. tarver was really the only guy there worth fighting, and even then, wins over byrd and a couple more hvy's would have been better legacy wise. a tyson fight could have broken the PPV sales of lewis - tyson. it would have been a huge money spinner. considering jones was driven by money, the risk was minimal. roy's hubris was the catalyst for going back down, as he probably thought he could still clean out that division.
There is a reason he did not stay. There are not many John Ruiz type fighters with no skill to handpick and the public would have demanded he fight someone with a pulse after a while and Jones was no going to do that. Roy knows he would have gotten his Glass Jaw shattered at Heavyweight.
I think Chris Byrd would have given him fits. One of the main reasons why he beat Ruiz was because he is a slow plodder - Chris Byrd around that time could hardly be described in that manner.
jones himself said he would of loved a fight vs Tyson , roy knew he was in neck deep when he moved up and it was never about him taking over the division , more for history making which is why beating ruiz for the title then what would off been a big money fight with tyson then that would off been it , i mean who else would he of had a chance against chris byrd prehaps but lewis and the klitches forget about it. i could never understand why he needed to move back down after sitting on top off the world. in hindsight he should of risked a Ko loss to one of the heavys in another history making fight instead of LHW Tarver. i think a fight vs aging Holyfield would off been a good one for jones and a good chance off him getting the win.
