What if Roberto Duran had defeated Marvelous Marvin Hagler in Nov 1983? Their fight was a good one, I saw it with my brother in law on Closed Circuit Television. $10.00 a ticket. Would we have seen a Hearns vs Duran fight much earlier?

Assuming Duran won legitimately and the rest of his career panned out the same, he'd probably leapfrog Fitzsimmons and Charles in my all time p4p rankings, moving up from #7 to #5.

I don't think the Hearns fight would have happened any sooner. Roberto fought Tommy in his next fight, about 7 months after Hagler. Had he beaten Hagler the timing of that fight would have either been similar or later, but not significantly earlier, imo.

Arguably the greatest win in boxing history. Hard to top an overblown lightweight beating one of the greatest middleweights of all time. You can debate number 1, but Hagler is certainly top 4.

Duran would’ve been the first four weight champion too, and by a few years…and he’d have landed two of those titles in the same year. He’s probably my all-time favorite fighter.

This! I also wonder, goal-wise, how things would’ve changed for Hearns with the chance to be the first four weight champion gone.

Sugar Ray Leonard would have been his next fight IMO.

And the crazy thing is, how close the actual scoring was.
In a twelve rounds fight, with things as they were, Duran would have pulled off the upset.

The fight was always a draw IMO and Duran should have gotten a rematch. If he had been given the nod a rematch with Hagler would have been next rather than a Hearns fight. Duran really exposed a lot of Marvins weaknesses and Ray Leonard has said he never thought he could beat Hagler until he saw Duran fight him because Duran countered and befuddled Hagler so much. Even though Duran didnt get the decision this fight showed why he is one of the best p4p fighters ever, definitely a top 5 lock.

His best win for sure. Even with what happened I was impressed by his performance. Very skillful chess match that is often overlooked bcuz it doesn't match the action of SRL/Hearns series, Duran/SRL 1 n Hagler/Hearns. Tbf those r classic fights so I dont knock Duran/Hagler I think I like it more than most.

This was at a moment when MMH was not remotely diminished but at his very peak. Yet Duran was winning after 13 rounds. He was vastly superior to how SRL would be against a badly slowed and aging Hagler. Duran-Hagler and Montreal forever clinch Duran for me as the P4P best since Robinson. Then, years later, Barkley happened, and what former LW Duran did to this future HW who would retire Coetzee in a very good fight stamps Duran as a P4P monster.

If SRL-Duran III had been scheduled for the Championship Distance, Ray might've been in a lot of trouble after Roberto's right at the end of round 11 opened that 60 stitch gash on SRL's right eyebrow.

Duran to SRL before Ray took on Hagler: "You box him, you beat him!"

When my brother in law went to see the Hagler vs Duran bout on Closed Circuit Television in Nov 1983, we both had the bout as even, then Hagler closed the fight with effective aggressiveness.
