I prefer to take what Maxim said immediately after the fight. I believe that without the 103 degree heat, Robinson would have been the new champion. You believe what you want to.
"You believe what you want to." I have for over seventy years. But, these boxing questions are not important questions in the big scheme of things. Doesn't amount to a hill of beans what anybody believes about anything concerning any sport. I don't quite understand why we can't just have fun debating without these unnecessary asides, and often attacks.
If Robinson was having it that easy why couldn't he pace himself and coast to a one sided victory? Please answer that question.
I didn't mean that nastily ,looking at it I suppose it can be construed that way, but it wasn't intentional:good
Bill Heinz asked him that question and before he answered it he said , "I'll tell you, you were showing off," and Ray nodded. Question answered. Do you dispute that Robinson was in a lead so insurmountable that he could not be overtaken unless he was; 1.Knocked out 2. Retired through some sort of injury. If you agree , given that Maxim was not a puncher, and Ray was never ko'd , andMaxim could not win on points after the first 10 rds ,what do you think Maxims tactics were? Please answer my questions.
There are two arguments here. 1. The Heat effected everyone. 2. The Heat effected everyone....but Joey Maxim. Do you believe Maxim is impervious to climate conditions?
Okay sorry I was too testy. Getting old, I guess. But there are too many on the board right now who are quite willing to call someone "stupid" for taking what I think any reasonable adult would consider a defensible position--for example that Harry Wills might have defeated Harry Greb if they fought.
I will get my head handed to me, but I've watched this fight many times, I don't think Robinson was so far ahead when he started to really go back starting about the 10th that he should have had the fight sewed up. But I concede one thing, that Robinson was a mile ahead seems to have been the consensus at ringside, as it was that Vitali was so far ahead of Byrd that he couldn't possibly lose regardless of what he did the last three rounds. I didn't see either fight quite that one-sided, although both Sugar Ray and Vitali were ahead going into the later rounds. I should sit down and actually score the Robinson-Maxim fight round by round, but my take is that many rounds were close, but most give all the close rounds to Robinson. But I know I am in a tiny minority on this one.
There are no arguments at all. There are statistics though. 3 men were in the ring that night, 2 of them succumbed to the heat. The ONLY logical conclusion is the heat affected Maxim less than the other 2. Secondly, the scoring suggests Robinson would have fared no worse in cooler conditions, seeing as he was one of the 2 men most affected by the prevailing ones.
It's no good showing off if you can't get the victory is it? Maxim's tactics were simple, win the fight. Mission accomplished... Do you not agree that Robinson was struggling for many rounds? A tank empties slowly, he surely knew he was in trouble before finally collapsing don't you agree? Neither me nor you know how the heat affected Maxim don't you agree?
I would expect Wills to be a heavy favourite over Greb and I wouldn't be surprised whichever one got the win. I've no problem giving out the verbals which I'm sure is no secret ,but it is usually in response to provocation.
I wouldn't say that answered my questions but I'm not in the mood to argue this morning, got the TV on and I'm sure you know what is dominating the news.
Very true, no words can do the man justice. Just watching footage of him brings emotion no words can explain. His aura was incredible. I'm not really a religious man but I do belive and hope we go to a better place after death. How can a man with so much fire and charisma just disappear for eternity? His soul is too strong to vanish.
You can debate this one forever. Maxim outweighed him. Ray was already approaching the best ATG status. Who knows what shape he was in (on that particular night) after fighting once a month for 12+ years? You don't see the 'modern' boys moving up, at least not after a 130 fights in 12 years! The ONLY time he was ever 'stopped'!? There's never been a better fighter than Ray (Ali said so R.I.P.)
