What if Robinson HAD fought the black murderers row of his day?

Robinson did not meet many talented black fighters as champion.

That's not an unreasonable point of view at all. But imagine he took them on as part of a busy 1940's year....

    JANUARY - Fight Holman Williams

    FEBUARY - Fights Charley Burley

    MARCH - Fights Ezzard Charles

    JUNE - Fights Charley Burley

    SEPT - Fights Eddie Booker

    DECEMBER - Cocoa Kid.

Only an insane person would look at that schedule and pick him to beat all of them.

Of course, this is an extreme example. But imagine he took on Burley, Booker and Kid as part of an otherwise busy year. You'd surely expect him to lose to one of these masters.

Robinson would win. Definitely in close fights with Williams and Burley, but he would win.

TBH it's surprising how little losses effect rankings of fighters when they fought a ton of quality opposition, and have lots of good wins.

No one talks about Langford losing to Young Peter Jackson, Jim Flynn and Larry Temple.

I think Robinson dropping a few there's a good chance it could really enhance his legacy, making him much less disputable as the No.1

But maybe it could interfere with his career in the long run, and maybe it'd end up hurting it, in a more complex butterfly effect way.

there's two ways of looking at this.

    1) there was Ray Robinson, other contenders (some of the row) and then the Murder's Row.

    2) Ray Robinson, 'IF' he wasn't just an extra bit special would have been among the Row himself(?).

I mean, Williams a great Box/Fighter, Marshall a great stylist, Moore really a L-HW and then the others, seemingly crowned by Burley.

So 'IF' SRR didn't have that little Marketable ALL ROUND Extra - SKILL, STYLE, Flash, Personality and audience appeal, well again he would have been listed with them.

So was it all just Monetary based OWNERSHIP & Marketing with Ray, or was he 'maybe' that little bit better than the Row???

my own belief is BOTH, safe answer? NO!!!

Why, because sure Ray might have been beat by the odd one, EVERY FIGHTER can be, but overall he had that little something, which SECURED Him.

Fights SHOULD Have been made, and again he might have lost the odd, however in returns or series I believe he would have still come out on top.

and Lloyd Marshall was 'probably' the BEST of the Middleweight & Catchweight fighters, of the Row.

    just one mans thoughts.
