Sowhat If,the first time schmeling had faced Joe Louis was when Louis was the champion?
And Max had actually defeated Joe as he did in their first fight?

Question -Would Max be rated any higher, beating Louis as actually the champ?

Yes. If only for the reason he'd have become a two-time World Champion.

I'd add that he'd likely have been able to defend it a few times, too.

Would have been a case of perhaps the title disappearing over to Germany.
This fight would take place in 1938 , so a good bit of propaganda for Germany at the time.
Not sure if Joe gets a rematch even,at least not straight away.
    Murky politics.

It is not entirely clear what you are projecting here.

Does Louis get an early title shot based on his win over Carnera or Baer, then lose to Schmeling around the time he actually did?

Does Schmeling somehow reverse the outcome of the title fight that actually happened?

There is no fight between Joe and Max in 1936 .
Joe wins the title from Braddock as he did.
Louis defends against Schmeling in 1938 and is KO d in the twelve round.
Obviously Louis loses his title here.

So my question was, with Max beating Joe (heavyweight champ),is he perhaps rated higher now.
Also as Man Machine points out, become the champ a second time.

With that in mind, the assumption would have to be that Schmeling doesn't go into retirement the following year and pushes on for as long as he can, beyond '39.

The wild card there is that you devalue Louis.

Does Schmeling retire immediately, allowing Louis to win his vacant title, and then pick up the real timeline?

Schmeling may get dethroned by Tony Galento

I think Joe's career would have been ruined.
