I guess one could dispute who were the top black fighters. Gains and Godfrey cancel each other out 2-2.

There are plenty of arguments about this guy or that guy being old. Fitz and Jeff to Johnson, and Sharkey to Louis were old. Schmeling was a tyro when beaten by Gains.

Jackson to Jeff, Wills to Sharkey, and Louis to Marciano, were old.

I think it kind of evens out. They appear to be pretty evenly matched.

Agree. Dempsey could have gone if he had wanted to. He would have been an idiot not to dodge the draft though. He was just coming to the peak of his powers and on the brink of the riches of the title. It's pretty easy to figure out why he didn't go - and "providing for his family" isn't the answer, IMO.
