Two points here. Firstly Wlad was going to lose sooner rather than later. Secondly Fury was ranked around #7 when he got his title shot, so he wasn't the most obvious person to get to him first. The most likely outcome in this scenario, is a seamless transition to Joshua. Having said that Wilder had the WBC, so there could have been negotiations on that.
