Rahman knocks out Lewis in their November '01 rematch
Rahman confirms his status as the new dog in town by knocking out Lewis again. Lewis retires, claiming he has no more drive to compete. Rahman is able to prove that the altitude and attitude questions regarding Lewis in the first fight meant nothing, and with new promoter Don King at his side has his eyes on the big bucks. John Ruiz claims he is the true champion.

First up is a title fight in China in early 2002. Former contender Frans Botha is brought out of mothballs, justified on the back of three wins against Joey Guy, David Bostice and Russell Chasteen, to fight Rahman. Botha shows his usual resilience and courage before Rahman scores a 9th-round TKO with Botha suffering from swollen eyes. Rahman is happy with his win but is looking to improve. John Ruiz claims he is the true champion.

Knowing they now need to provide a tougher challenge and looking to hit a monster buyrate, King puts all his efforts into promoting Rahman vs Tyson for June 2002. Despite misgivings by the various boxing commissions and states, King is able to orchestrate the press conferences (and especially Rahman) to avoid any fights breaking out and it's set for Madison Square Garden itself. While Rahman is the champion, it's Tyson that enters the fight as the favourite despite his age. Meanwhile, John Ruiz claims he is the true champion.

In the fight itself, Rahman has trained hard but seems intimidated by Iron Mike and his entourage. Despite having the tools to do well, he is unable to cope with the pressure and falls to a knockout loss in the middle rounds. Tyson is victories.

After many years, Tyson is finally back at the top of the tree again. By coming back from the 'wilderness' after his ear-biting ban and winning title belts in 3 different decades, he's given his legacy a very big boost. On the other hands, journalists are fiercely divided, some acclaiming the return of mainstream interest to the division, others deriding Tyson's violent thug image. Clamour to face Tyson is huge, from guys like Byrd and Wladimir to others like Holyfield and Roy Jones Jr. Lewis suggests he might be interested in making a comeback if the price is right.

And John Ruiz claims he is the true champion.
