Tucker unifies? Fair enough, but going into late 87, Biggs would be name, Tucker would need to fight...
While that's possible, I'm not sure if King would put a tourney together unless he had a star moneymaker involved like Tyson (or like Tito when he put the MW tourney together).
That's an interesting point. What would happen to prospects like Biggs, or perhaps even Marvis Frazier, without Tyson in their way to ruin them? Perhaps either or both of them grabs some kind of title.
Oh come on, we both know we would be pick'em against Marvelous Marvis in 87/88, Tyson or no Iron Mike...:yep
Maybe but he was only 15-0 when he fought Tyson at the end of 87. Unifying against Berbick and Smith would justifiable reasons not to fight Biggs. Biggs went on to lose to Damiani and Mason by KO in 88/89 so effectively wrote him self out of contention thus clearing the way for a Tucker/Douglas rematch, post Spinks and also allows Holyfield time to legitimise himself as a heavyweight
Spinks and Butch were many thinks, but they were never controlled by DKP. If no Tyson existed, Butch Lewis would have a big influence on who was the generally recognized World Champion at Heavyweight.
No Tyson defeat makes Biggs an universal #1 contender at anyone who held alphabet crap in 87/88. And, on top of this, at least a pick-em in any fight...
King would no doubt wangle it so that he had a slice of every fighter's contract. It's perfectly possible that he would not need a superstar to run the tourney. Spinks would be a stumbling block though...I could be wrong, but I don't think King had an 'option' on Spinks. I agree with those saying Holyfield would be the man to finally restore some order. In the meantime, there would be some very interesting matchups...
If no Tyson defeat Tucker is 35-0 coming off the win over Douglas in 87 and holds the IBF title. Berbick 31-4 coming off victory over Pinklon Thomas and is the WBC titlist prior to facing Tyson at the end of 86 Bonecrusher was 19-5 going into his 87 fight with Tyson and the reigning WBA champ on the back of a title winning 1 round stoppage of Tim Witherspoon. Yes Biggs may have been a genuine threat to these guys but he could have been avoided for a year and he tripped himself up in 88/89
No, no Tyson match, means Biggs at worst get an WBA (Smith) mandatory... Biggs (without hindsight) goes in a betting favourite verses Berbick, Smith or Tucker.
Yeah probably right if Tucker Berbick comes off Biggs Smith could well do too. I think Biggs beats Smith too, although Bonecrusher has a very good punchers chance. I dont think he beats Tucker however. I still think it is Tucker in this mess who comes out with the three belts
