anyone talking **** about B-Hop is a ****ing tool that just started watching him in his late 30's-40's. You ****ing tits need to get a god damn clue. When people get to that age they have to change **** up in order to be successful, which include spoiling tactics. Bernard is top 3 MW's that ever lived! go **** yourselves and while you're at it watch some old B-Hop.
He's difficult to label. He can lead, counter, rough the opponent up on the inside, walk them down, box off the back foot, etc, and he can use both long and short punches effectively. Sometimes he moves and pot shots, and sometimes he stands and unloads combinations, as in that Pavlik gif that Bogo posted. When he's backed into a corner he uses any trick he can to gain victory and spoil the opponent's momentum. One of the craftiest and most awkward fighters I've seen -- he should definitely retire at this stage, but when he was at his best he must have been a nightmare to deal with. This is a good video where he explains his approach to boxing: [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SHwPBTDDp00[/ame]
Hopkins has an amazing ability to control a fight with his footwork alone. His ability to control the distance of a fight has to be about as good as anyone in history. The guy is so skilled, we will miss him when he's gone. What he has done in his 40's is legendary stuff.
I'm becoming more and more of a fan of B-Hop to be honest. But as for styles, I'm still sticking with what I said... Inside fighter/Swarmer/Pressure fighter Slugger/Brawler/Puncher Outside fighter/Boxer Boxer-puncher Counterpuncher Unconventional Thats it as far as I'm concerned, keep it simple. But how you can call Roberto Duran a slugger is compltely beyond me, Duran could do pretty much anything in the ring and I would class him as a Boxer-puncher, calling Duran a slugger dosen't do him ANY justice.
Duran spent way too much time applying pressure, coming forward and fighting at mid-range and on the inside to be a Boxer/Puncher. No, most Sluggers don't do the style justice nor do people like you who incorrectly associate it with being a unskilled brawler. Stick to what you said but it doesn't make you any less wrong.
Great thread. To me Hopkins knows and practices all styles and uses them accordingly to the situation. He is a thinking fighter that reads his opponent well and then uses the tools to get the job done. When he is being bullied he will shut down the momentum with spoiling tactics, but when someone is giving him time and space he will unload on you untill he feels the window of opportunity is closing. It is really hard to label Hopkins because he has used counter punching/ambush tactics in the past, but has also opened up with more offense in the pascal and Pavlik fights. Like I said above, he has no preference on how he fights as long as he wins. Great boxer.
He's a old school philly slug smotherer who evolved to a technical defensive expert with a carhisma icon legend label all around him.

Any less wrong ????? This is coming from someone who refers to Roberto Duran as a 'slugger', a one dimensional style of boxing despite the fact that Duran could do literally anything in the ring, the majority of his fights saw him going toe-to-toe and applying constant pressure but he could box if he wanted to. At the end of the day most boxing fans comsider a brawler and a slugger to be the same thing, its just that you seem to be adamant in confusing boxing fans by coming out with bull**** regarding boxing sryles.
