DM's legacy is that he's the 2nd best LH since (a) a prime Virgil Hill, or (b) Michael Spinks. Depending on how faded you believe Hill was when DM and RJJ beat him. But more importantly, his legacy will simply be one of the biggest, if not the biggest, detracting detail from RJJ's legacy. No one is really going to mention him unless Jones was mentioned first.
Chill out you moron. Where did I say he wasn't a brilliant fighter? I feel the same about Calzaghe, bags of skill but wasted defending a bogus belt.
:good Thats it man. If DM would have vacated the WBO belt, he would have easily got the madatory for RJJ! But in germany all the guys love the WBO belt sooo much, that a vacation was never on the line By the way: great new Avatar!!
Exactly, the whole "fighter makes the belt" argument is just an excuse to duck mandatories as far as I'm concerned. Thanks, this always used to be my avatar but I lost a bet so was forced to have Super Joe there for 3 months.
Um..what? Thats crap. I could go on all day about how many undeserving mandatories have either got a shot at the title or forced the champion to vacate because they weren't worthy. Again...Lou De Valle and William Guthrie challenged and won DM's vacant titles, so they must of been the highest available challengers. I doubt DM would have minded "dodging" them. So many good fighters have had the WBO title. One of the best fighters in the world right now owned the WBU title for years, they are all the same. They are all run by corrupt people and in every division the strongest champ isnt the strongest because of what belt they hold.
It's not my fault DM never made an attempt to cross over to the States. I live in the States and never got to see a single one of his fights.
It depends on what you believe is worse...... Hiding behind a belt and defending against mandatories or Vacating to swerve/duck/avoid (whichever you prefer) a **** mandatory Now - vacating is only acceptable IMO if you are actually fighting a better opponent than the one you were expected to face. Example - Antonio Margarito wins the IBF title, he can either vacate and fight Cotto, or fight Joshua Clottey. Easy choice. Hiding behind a belt to duck the best fighters in the division is one of the most absurd things a fighter can do - Joe Calzaghe (WBO) & Sven Ottke (IBF) are clear examples, and it could be added that Junior Witter (WBC) was similar, though for different reasons.
DM came along about 10 years to early. He fought during a time when Euro fighters got NO LOVE.No question that he would be a exciting fighter with a lot more fans had he come along later. He didnt vacate any belts he was STRIPPED!Roy later gathered those belts.
He was a tremendous fighter that will be forever haunted by the speculation of what would have happened if he fought the best fighter of his era. He was good enough that a Jones victory wasn't an absolute certainty although my money would have been with Jones. While there's blame enough to knock both fighters Michalczewski should have made this fight happen. The lack of a showdown with Jones hurt him far more than Jones because no matter what argument you put forth Michalczewski had more to prove. The fact that this fight never happened was an absolute travesty. The demand was there. The money was there. The promoters of both of these fighters should be ashamed of themselves.
i think he was a great fighter, and did get in back and forward wars... very good inside fighter espically for an east european fighter... yes from the 4 belts that count...wbc,wba,ibf,wbo..... the wbo is probably lowest but on the other hand he probably held on to that one because that is the one the german promotors have ties too... much like don king and the wba, who always make john ruiz the number 1 or 2 continder for some reason. and yes at that time at that time euro fighters were not getting any love...because a lot of americans were stuck in the 50's, thinking the american fighter always wins and everyone should always come to usa... and the euro promotors also kinda had a point to prove, that they wanted to compete with america...and basically created a huge boxing scene which did not to depend on america. they saw that they had a big talent pool on which to depend on (east euro/soviet union) while american promotors sometimes didn't want to sign these guys, like it was a matter of principle
People complain that he was a WBO titlist but when you look at the reasons behind why it all makes sense. He fought for and won the WBA and IBF belts holding the WBO,IBF,and WBA belts all at once until he was unrightfully STRIPPED for displaying one belt next to the other and then not fighting a mandatory 30 freaking days after he had just won the belt. The WBC ****ed over someone he was familiar with in Rocchiagiani(sp?)and got sued for and lost $30 million.Lots of BS politics involved and IMO they simply didnt want some Euro taking off with there belts while they would rather have a Superstar like Roy hold them. I think the internet might also have something to do with why Euro fighters are more accepted now than back then.Instead of occasionally hearing a name or reading about someone you could now finally watch fights and judge for yourself.Fights from Germany are easily accesable now and sometimes even shown on premiere American networks(HBO). No doubt he would be a more televised fighter today.
Jones didn´t do so either. And why should he he wouldn´t have earned even half of what he earned over here.
if you think DM blew you dont know much bout fighting he lost hist last 2 fights cause he over stayed his welcome he loses from credit for not fightin in the US. he would have been HUGE over here with his style and would have given roy a hard time. i blame hbo for not airing some of his fights. he would have gotten exposure. did hbo air any of his fights?
