No he didnt fight everone or eles he would have never been stripped of the two titles. He wouldnt fight Lou DelValle, or William Guthrie. Say what you will about Guthrie now but then he was seen as a top 5 fighter and was seen as the furture of the weight Class. Jones also fought Reggie Johnson which was another fighter that DM wouldnt fight, or Tarver. Bottom line is Jones will been seen as a much better fighter at the weight and overall DM wont/cant be spoke of in the same sentance. The stoppage vs Griffin was and always will be an odd one. DM hit Griffin with a good shot that wobbled him, Griffin never went down and DM didnt land any of his follow up shots or very few of then and the Ref stopped the fight. Hill was a close fight that really could have gone either way. Rocco was kickin his ass, what put that fight in question was the fact that it was first a NC, ND or a draw I cant remember, but it was later changed to a win for DM.
He was stripped of one and gave the other up. I cant remember which one without checking into it and I dont have time right now.
No because DM should have never been AWARDED the Lineal title. In his fight with Hill neither man was seen as the top fighter in the weight that was Jones...and it wasnt for the UNDISPUTED title...Reason I say that is because those were the only two ways that you could win the Lineal title outside of beatting a fight that already has it:hi:
He was stripped by the IBF, becuase he was not able to face the mandatory within 30 (!) days. The WBA also stripped him, because he was holding the WBA belt and the WBO belt together at the same time. In 1997 the WBA saw the WBO as an enemy.
Jones at the time of the Hill DM fight had fought 2 times at light heavy winning a interim WBC title fight against an ancient McCallum and the Griffin DQ. So i would say Hill having just beaten Maske was the Linear champ and DM took it from him.
Actually Jones entered the Ring rankings at number one in 1996 when he beat then number 4 ranked Merqui Sosa who was also number one contender for the IBF belt at the time that Jones knocked him out in the second round. January 1996 was before Hill beat Maske. From that point on Jones was ranked number 1 in Ring. So a while he was ranked number 1 at both 175 and 168
One last thing on this topic..For those that are claiming that DM fought and beat the same fighters at Lt Heavy that Jones did...WRONG...lets look at who Jones fought at 175 that DM didnt. Lou DelValle who beat Hill but was robbed..So much so that Hill was forced into a rematch by the WBA. Lou was then paid step aside money so Hill could fight Maske, at which point he was to fight Lou after, which is the real reason that DM was stripped of the title. Winning the belt he then was held to the madated fight with Lou, DM refused so he was stripped. DM knew this going into the fight with Hill...That whole stripped for holding the WBO was BS made up by UBP. And DM was given 90 days to fight Lou. not that it would have made a difference but 30 was something once again made up by UBP. Lou won the WBA title 90 days and a week after DM beat Hill:good Then lost it to Jones the next year. I will finish this in a while:hi: I gotta get some work done
Good post. DM had plenty of opportunity to hold two of the three proper belts but chose not to. Thats not Jones' fault, he wanted to be undisputed champion so he beat the men holding the three belts.
I don't know how anyone can rate him as a top 10 light heavy of all-time like somebody said. Ezzard Charles Archie Moore Gene Tunney Roy Jones Jr Michael Spinks Billy Conn Harold Johnson Bob Fitzsimmons Bob Foster Tommy Gibbons Battling Levinsky Philadelphia Jack O'Brien Tommy Loughran Maxie Rosenbloom Joey Maxim Just a list off the top of my head of fighters that rank above him imo. A good fighter, but his reluctance to travel and prove himself against the best will cost him.
Im back to finish up my post. Reggie Johnson Who for most of DM run was atop of the weightclass, most people that have followed his career would tell you that Johnson only REAL lost came at the hands of Jones. Most people felt that he beat Castro TWICE, Toney, Tarver. And he did beat Steve Collins and Julio Ceser Gonzalaz who beat DM. Johnson won the IBF belt by knocking out William Guthrie...HMM were have we heard that name??? Thats right folks it was the same Guthrie that DM gave up the IBF title so he didnt have to fight...In his first meeting with the IBF after taking the titles from Hill, DM was told that he would have to defend vs Guthrie, DM told the IBF NO he was going to fight Nicky Piper, the IBF was going to let the fight happen, but the made the fight between Guthrie and Darrin Allen for the interim title. Guthrie who was the number contender then went to court and stopped the fight ordering the IBF the only US based abc group to uphold the promise that Guthrie who was the number one contenders for almost 2 years by that time, would fight for the title in his next fight...The IBF then stripped DM and made the Interim title a full title. Guthrie won vs Allen, lost his title to Johnson who lost it to Jones. David Telesco Not really that much here. David was a very good fighter, that was better then most of the guys that DM fought..Telesco was a very big very strong fighter that would have been much more then a handful for DM and a fight that DM stood a very good chance of losing. Eric Harding Seen by many as the third best fighter at 175 for a while from 1997 to his lost at the hand of Jones in 2000. Along the way he beat Tarver and Griffin. Then there was Mike McCullum, Otis Grant, and Clinton woods. Now lets take a look at the fighters that DM did actaully fight that Jones fought. Derrick Harmon was dominated by Jones lost every round until he was stopped in the 11th. Vs DM he was winning every round and dominating DM until he was caught and stopped in the 11th round...Jones was Bashed for this fight, it was called one of DM greatest wins two years after Jones toyed with him. Montell Griffin won a DQ over jones on his back, was took out in a few seconds in a rematch..Vs DM Griffen was winning the fight easy, got caught with a good shot Wobbled back Dm jumped on him landed maybe two of about ten shots the fight was stopped, in the FOURTH round its one thing if he was taking a beatting but he was giving the beatten. Virgil Hill Knocked out by Jones with ONE shot to the body, hills only knockout lose. DM was in the fight of his life with Hill. Many felt that Hill one the fight. Im not one of them but I do know that it really could have gone either way, it was a close fight, no matter what some of the people are saying now. Richard Hall took one of the worst beatting in the history of boxing vs Jones, got dropped about a hundred times in that fight Jones was Bashed heavily for taking this fight. DM was in a close fight with Hall in the first fight with yet another iffy stoppage, in a fight were DM was in worst shape then Hall and Hall was the one stopped. Had to have a rematch..DM once again was have a very tough time but pulled it with without question Julio Cesar Gonzalez Beat the **** out of DM, after having the **** beat out of him by Jones...Gonzlalez also lost three other fights to guys on the list of those that DM didnt fight that Jones did. I know this was a pretty long post, but it is pretty good information that should but isnt really talked about when this subject comes up...DM fans would have you think that DM and Jones went right down the list and beat all the top fighters....Jones did do that DM didnt, he picked and choose the ones that he would fight and alwas seemed to pick the easier ones on Jones list...Keep in mind that only Hill fought DM first...All the rest were jones leftovers:good
Im glad you posted that, that is the kind of stuff that always seemed to happen in DM fights. You think you could find the fights with Hall (1), and Griffin...I would but Im at work and I dont want to be looking around on those kinds of sites:hey
You have proven time and time again your COMPLETE bias towards any Euro fighter. Your Gonzalez argument shows just how desperate you are.I wont even touch on it. Must be frustrating to be you in a time when Euro's are all over the place. Then again i do recall you commenting on the gifs below.....I could easily see that punch coming(after watching a slo-mo gif loop over and over). :rofl This is a DM thread not what Roy did thread.
Find both of those fights and watch them both get TKO'd. Make **** up it helps your case:smooch You also made the argument before that he was never stripped yet dumped his belts to duck someone???Elaborate you big bad American you.
