What is everybody's fave documentary/film on boxing?

Kings of the Ring was a pretty good one.

 

German TV has some great stock of film footage, in 1966, just before the
Mildenberger fight.
The raw footage of Ali is the best, not the over-produced and edited stuff.

Great footage of U.S. soldiers based in Germany, interviewed before the fight.
I was split 50/50 on their views of Ali.
Some stating, that Ali should go over to Greece to fight next.

 

I would love to see that.

That guy. Huge star in Germany back in the day, made movies, records and so on. Very good boxer too with a great story. Came from a poor nothing background, made it big as a boxer, movie star, singer. After retirement he had several successful businesses but never got over the loss to Johnson (a fight which was there for him to take but he was too much past his prime and couldn´t pull the trigger anymore, still pretty good for someone who started out as a lw) and that he wasn´t the admired hero anymore. He started to drink, took pills and in the early 80s he accidently shot his wife while beeing drunk. Went to prison and never got over this. Married again later on and died, I think in 2000, alone in a retirement home, suffocating ona piece of bread - but he had several strokes, heart attacks, cancer and other illnesses before that. He was one tough *******, he had multiple fractures in his career including both arms and hands, his jawbones, chin, a few ribs, his nose a few times. Guess the people who denied him his license when he first tried for it were somewhat right when they told him he was too small and fragile for proboxing.

 

people can cry all they want about Frazier losing. futch did the right thing and stopped it. And that documentary is good but one of the biased piece o hit I've ever seen.

 

Im not ashamed to say i cried like hell at the end of Ring of Fire, such a tradgic set of circumstances for all unfortunate enough to be involved. There was a Mancini one too which was terribly sad.


Facing Ali was quite enjoyable and a good laugh. Duran: Beyond The Glory, The Legendary Nights series and a few Les Darcy Doccos i have are also some of my favs. Infact i dont think i've seen any boxing docco i didnt enjoy on some level.

 

Joe Gans too from memory. He was only a young fella when he was getting thrown into these things with grown men and winning.

 

There was a brilliant documentary on the BBC, about Johnny Owen's death, in his challenge to then Bantamweight title holder, Lupe Pintor.

Johnny's father visits the Mexican, and Pintor agrees to come to Owen's hometown to unveil a statue, put up in the Welshman's honour.

 

One of my faves was the Channel 4 'Dispatches' (I think) one on Don King, with Jack Newfield narrating.

 

Yeah, better to be brought up reading the likes of The Ring who once wrote in one retrospective of FOTC that "Ali rose from a 15th round knockdown to win the round". :!:

 

okay, well that is bull****. Even if he had won the round it would be 10-9. and he didn't except by putting on a small flurry Ali didnt win.

Didn't Larry merchant have Ali winning it by two points?
I had Frazier winning by 3 points.

 

I had some tears in my eyes at the sad end of 'Facing Ali', it was a great film though.

 

It is sad to see Ali struggling the way he does these days. What i took away from that docco was that everyone who jumped in the ring with him shared something special. If the same concept could've been used to make a Joe Louis documentary, that would've been amazing.
