Per an article in Boxing Scene today, Mares has turned down a fight with WBC super featherweight champion Takashi Miura, which was being targeted for the Mayweather vs Maidana undercard. Mares now instead is talking about facing Leo Santa Cruz, either at featherweight or at a catchweight of 124 pounds. But Santa Cruz's next fight is a mandatory vs Frampton, so he probably wouldn't even be available until late summer/early fall at the earliest. Mares also says in the article he's "just settling in at featherweight", so presumably he sees that as his weight class for the foreseeable future. No mention of any other possible opponent for the Mayweather undercard. No mention of Jhonny Gonzalez.

To me, this all suggests Mares is going through a crisis of confidence after being KTFO by Gonzalez last August. He quickly activated the rematch clause to save face, then strung Gonzalez along, finally coming up with a (never verified) rib injury to postpone the fight. Now it seems he has no apparent plans to rematch Gonzalez at all, unless he thinks he can string along the rematch clause into perpetuity. For Gonzalez's sake, I hope Mares and his handlers soon declare once and for all if/when the rematch will occur.

Good for Mares back to 122 he got no business going after a 130 lbs fighter he's realizing his limit lots of good fight left for him at 122 Santa Cruz is one option. Rigo's contract with TR expires in June of this year.

Not too long ago Abner scoffed at the idea of fighting LSC when they asked him about that fight. He said he wanted Donaire.

You guys marched him out of his best weight class & now you are mad at him cause everybody towers over him

He didn't know he was primed for a couple of paydays as a multi weight champ, he should ignore the media relax off PEDs go on lite diet to 130 and fight at 115 for a 4th title, big show downs vs narvaez and Roman Gonzalez if he wants to fight big guys

He matched himself, don't blame "us". His TEAM negotiated with Miura, Gonzalez, Ponce De Leon et al. He wanted to do this that and the other...we'd have been happy if he stayed at 118 and continued to kick ass there.

The thing is Miura is just as dangerous as Gonzalez.
