He was a good fighter. But Ward lays him the **** out. He gets talked about a lot because he was undefeated.
Not Calzaghe-related but there are still some areas in which Britain is undeniably world class: The arts Higher education Finance Motorsport Car design
He also thought Jeff Lacy would beat him. Joe was a different animal when he got into the ring. At some point Roy Jones crumbled. Maybe Calzaghe would have got to him first.
Who did Calzaghe avoid at 168? He fought most of the top 10 guys. It's not Joe's fault that some of the names have not stood the test of time.
I think what really bothers people is the thought that Calzaghe as overrated as he was would have beaten Froch far more convincingly than ward and possibly beaten ward it eats away at them that some sheep shagger could beat their son of god.
Did you just compare Jeff Lacy to prime Roy at 168?atsch Shot old Roy beat the crap out of Lacy.. Lacy is a nobody, and to think Joe thought that overrated, slow, limited plodder would beat him, speaks volumes of his confidence. Just because he went into animal mode, and overcame those odds, does not mean he does with Jones Jr. Jones crumbled at the age of 35, after a long career and dropping from HW to LHW, to take on a man that dedicated his whole career to beating him.. That would not have happened even a few years earlier. It especially would not have happened 9 years earlier, to a man named Calzaghe that didn't even stop old Roy, though Tarver, Johnson, and Green all were able to do. I can't think of any way Joe gets to Roy first... Power? no. Speed? no. Work rate? Prime Jones wouldn't be troubled with 100 Calzaghe punches a round, in fact, the way Calzaghe would square up right in front of him, I think Roy would be licking his lips.. Roy was damn near unbeatable at 168.. The only ones with a chance are fighters with a huge punch, Benn, G-Man, Jackson, even Toney if he could land a perfect shot... I have always had trouble even coming up with a way Calzaghe would have beat peak Roy. Don't get me wrong, Joe Calzaghe is a great fighter in his own right.. He has a huge heart, amazing speed, great stamina, a tough fighter.. Stylistically I just don't see how it goes his way though.. Roy was faster, Roy had way more power, (the variety of punches in his arsenal don't only surpass Joe but nearly any other fighter as well ever), more foot speed, his stamina was up there with Calzaghe, I guess I think peak Roy was pretty much on a different level. At some point Roy would hit Joe with something big, he didn't see coming, and I can't imagine Joe playing safe, I think he would fight fire with fire, to a faster man, with more firepower.
Joe was always faster than Roy, Joe also threw punches from every angle imaginable. Joe fought with a rythm I've never seen before, and adapted to whatever was necessary. Roy lacked adaptibility, he was less of a fighter than Joe and Hopkins in a few ways. His hype was his most impressive trait.
Man get off the Roy hype. I like him but he's nowhere near unbeatable in his prime. Calzaghe is unbeatable in his prime and out of his prime and doesn't have a glass jaw like Roy does. Calzaghe can beat any 168/175er in the history of boxing.
Dude, you just called Joe Calzaghe unbeatable.. You need to get off the hype.. Are you not a Mayweather nuthugger as well??? Yeah, you are one to talk. Fanboy.
Calzaghe has clearly never lost. Why do you keep calling him beatable when clearly he wasn't. There was no blueprint on how to beat him. He keeps getting dropped but he gets back up and delivers the hand on justice on his opponents. No one can beat him.
Who the **** has Calzaghe fought for you to call him unbeatable? Lacy? Kessler? Old Hopkins? Old Jones? If those 4 couldn't do it, I guess that means on one in history can.atsch There are many, many great fighters with so many different styles, so vast, to call anyone unbeatable is stupid, let alone Calzaghe. When has he ever even been in the ring with a prime ATG? Roy Jones fought in 5 different weight classes before he was ever beat. Being undefeaeted does not matter as much as to who you beat and when you beat them. You think Calzaghe can walk through Jones' resume and beat everyone? Toney, Young Hopkins, Tarver, Ruiz, Hill ect... Hell, name me one elite southpaw Joe has beat, in an article I read, a statement was made that Joe didn't fancy fighting other southpaws.. Wonder why that was? I know, because his career was so calculated by risk factor that he managed to get through an ENTIRE professional career without fighting a good southpaw.. How is that even possible.:huh To me, that means he wasn't tested enough.. Cetainly is not tested enough to get an "unbeatable" tag because he didn't technically lose a professional fight.
