You have Berrio, Zuniga, Miranda, Julio, Torres, Pitalua, Prescott...all big punchers. All good Colombian fighters are big punchers too, no exceptions...why is that? Is that what they're looking for in Colombia, when they raise them? ...strange to say the least, I think.:blood EDIT: ColOmbians, after ColOn, not ColUmbus.
Just culture I suppose. I'm not sure how the education system is over there so maybe they are working labouring jobs from a young age and building physical strength from there.
Nah...this power is genetic, not taught. It has to do with the way they select them when they start them out. They must really discourage anyone without a big punch. Still, you'd expect there to be at least a couple of them with a very good chin (who could take some of those big punches when they were starting out) and with good boxing skills. But no...
How can it be explained? I think it goes a bit like this: Colombians are naturally gifted to punch hard (more hard puncher as a % of the population than in most other countries in which boxing is popular); just like the Mexicans are gifted with a good chin. Then, they must select only hard punchers for the pro game. However, quite a few of these hard punchers don't have a great chin, so...why weren't they "flushed out" by other hard punchers as they came through the ranks? Luck? Boxing skill? Maybe...maybe a combination of all these things. Maybe, they are also protected as they come through... ...still, why would they not also select really hard-chinned guys with good boxing skill? :huh The hard punchers would "expose" who these hard-chinned guys were...:blood
...not as good as the punch...obviously...but that presents the conundrum...with so many hard punchers, how did the lesser chins survive? Did they just punch even harder than the other guy, and beat him to the punch?:huh
On the chin part, though, many of them don't mind mixing it up or taking risks, to land their own shots. Miranda mixing it up with Pavlik and Abraham wasn't the smartest thing in the world.. but it makes for exciting fights.
