What is it with people getting so offended by trash talk?

Natural trash talk when fighters genuinely do not like each other is their business.
Manufactured trash talk for no other purpose than hyping a fight is corny horse ****. I don't like pro wrestling or soap operas.

Trash talk is aimed at selling fights to knuckle dragging imbeciles who don't understand the sport, the Ricky Hatton fan would be a good example of this. If that's your thing then fair enough.

I guess it would be better for boxing to be fought in front much smaller crowds/tv audience who do 'understand' the sport... mainstream equals money.

I'm not disputing that. I just wouldn't want to be associated with that type of trash. I never enjoyed WWF for similar reasons. The Chisora Haye bust up was good though. At least that was real.

Ahh yes, the holier than thou attitude of the Euro comes to light. Well us Americans and our average IQ's have somehow manged to dominate the sport over the last say 100 years or so. You've got the Klit brothers though, bravo for that...Stay classy fellas..

Yeah I was wrong to label all Americans sorry. You have some great champions.

I was basically saying that the trash talking generally comes from the US and to a lesser extent in Europe.

    Peace.

In all honesty, I don't like trash talk because I like to think there's a difference between boxing and WWE. That's becoming less and less true, and the likes of Haye, Chisora and Fury are part of the reason.
If it's so good for boxing, care to explain why this sport is basically on it's knees in terms of revenue, number of active fighters and the general level of prestige the sport commands?
I'd stop short of blaming fighters themselves - the rise of pay per view, greed of promoters and the multiplication of paper weights and championship belts has fed a situation where the guys who do the work have to stoop to this kind of demeaning crap. To me, fighters risking death or pugilistic dementia to entertain bloodthirsty morons in some kind of third rate circus show where even the walk in is now regarded as part of the entertainment does not represent progress.

I don't think anyone is offended it's more the fact that it can make the fighter doing it look like an arsehole depending on how far they take it. That fighter is then gonna take a lot of stick for being arrogant and disrespectful (even though sometimes it's just to promote the fight) as that is how they are coming across to the public.

In boxing you can actually kill the opponent, so a certain amount of respect is nice to see. I like trash talk more than regular talk, but the thing is there's a difference between talking a big game (Thurman) and just saying any annoying thing you can (Broner). The downside to trashtalk, and the reason most of us learn to limit it while growing up, is that occasionally everything you said comes right back at you and makes you look like a total idiot.

That's why some guys choose to play it safe and not say stuff that can be used against them in the court of public opinion. Ward is boring and can put you to sleep in an interview, but if he loses you won't be seeing the amount of jokes and hate because he didn't put that kind of pressure on himself.

    There's a difference between "entertainment" trash talk and being a full-on ******.
