I can't completely write Taylor off yet as he is still showing shades of greatness in his fights. Its just as if towards the end he loses his confidence and collapses when his opponent comes on strong. Pavlik and Froch are great examples of this. What does he need to do to get back to where he was when he fought Hopkins?
its his stamina. it just plain sucks Fights that Taylor gassed in: Hopkins vs Taylor I Taylor vs Ouma Taylor vs Pavlik I Taylor vs Pavlik II Taylor vs Lacy Taylor vs Froch And I'm sure i'm missing a few.
It is either a lack of endurance training/conditioning or just a failure to adequately pace himself in a fight. Maybe a bit of both, but I tend to think that it is the prior considering that he doesn't exactly have an overwhelming work rate.
He's just not that great, and doesn't have what it takes to be great He's a good fighter, not a great one He has good, not great, handspeed He has good, not great, power He has a mediocre defense He has mediocre fundamentals as far as footwork and punching technique He has a mediocre chin And he doesn't have any of the intangibles that are required. His ring IQ is very low, he doesn't know how to adjust on the fly, he fades under pressure
he shou stop fighting dangerous fighter at their peak....needs to study Calzaghe. stick to old bhop or a jones
He just doesn't have the ability to adjust to his opponents adjustments. he's talented but ultimately one dimensional.
he needs to learn to pace himself, from what manny steward has said he trains extremely hard, so its got to be a mental thing.
Frankly, he needs to relax more in the first half of fights. He expends too much energy and is wound too tightly early, which usually leads to him dominating, winning rounds big, and looking flashy early but inevitably fading down the stretch. He needs to learn how to do just enough to win rounds so he's not running on empty and relying on "round counting" to get through the latter stages of fights. A good puncher/finisher with superior pacing will continue to make him pay if he can't fix that. I don't think it's necessarily a cardio issue, so much as it is an energy management one. The unnecessary movements and tenseness he has with that amount of superficial muscle on his frame burn alot more energy, and he can't seem to compensate for that. He's still a quality fighter, just a bit of a frontrunner.
Almost all of this is true. Main problem is his stamina, but all these are valid criticism of him as a fighter.
Thats pretty much how i see it.Taylor looks in good shape prior to all his fights. He may well have had issues making 160,but at 168 he has no excuse's.Energy conservation should be at the forefront of his boxing strategy,he's technically sound, and has speed and power,he just seems to struggle against fighters who will go into the trenches.
