Great point. It's little things like that, if Taylor fixed them, would make fans swear he'd doubled his roadwork because we wouldn't see him fading in fights like we do. What I'm still trying to figure out is how a fighter with as much championship experience as Taylor has still doesn't seem relaxed in the ring. He's his own worst enemy in that way; he's either winning rounds big when he's on edge and landing a ton of "ooh" shots, or doing nearly nothing. Given who he's shared the ring with over the course of his career, I figured he'd be looking a little more comfortable in there by now.
I like everything you said except for a mediocre chin.. He takes a lot of big blows early in fights.. Its just after he starts to fade is when the punches take effect... Froch didnt hurt him at all until the last round and Pavilk didn't hurt him at all in the second fight.. The man his serious stamina issues but he can take a punch...
:yep:yep.. Funny stuff. You have to give him credit for beating/ruining a seemingly invincible Lacy though.
Taylor just lost the desire in my opinion. Against Hopkins(a guy who relies A LOT on breaking down opponents and finishing them late) he kept punching till the very end even though he was hurt late in the first fight he just kept punching all the way. Where's the fire and determination he showed against Hopkins TWICE and Winky Wright? Think he just got way too much too soon. The fight with Hopkins got him the undisputed title in one night and he just kept getting worse and worse since then.
Hopkins is a dangerous fighter to whoever he fights regardless of age. Think that was proven numerous times already and should be understood by now.
Against Pavlik Taylor went for the kill in a big way in round 2, but he was too wild, not composed enough and wasted too much energy. Second fight he fought smarter and it was a close battle until Pavlik got him with that body shot late on. He did nothing wrong in this fight, just got beat by a better fighter. Against Froch he was perhaps too over confident after the knockdown, but continued to outbox him. I don't buy any of the stamina, heart, desire excuses. As the fight went on Froch's stronger punches took their toll on him and in the 12th round Froch knew he had to win big and went for it. Taylor is a good fighter with flashes of greatness. His only 'mistake' is keeping his left so low.
I think that his problem is that he is too jerky early in fights, he burns alot of energy with all the extra crap that he does. Plus I dont think that he fights relexed. Too tight.
I'm on board with this. I just watched Froch vs. Taylor last night again, and noticed during the broadcast that the commentators kept saying Taylor admitted to them before hand that he'd worried about his stamina...A LOT. So instead of being in there concentrating on the fight, he's got his mind workin' around the thoughts of "Don't get tired....Don't get tired.....Don't get TIRED.". He did do better against Froch though (compared), and was even doin' pretty good work thru the 11th round. In the 12th, Froch did nail JT with some shots that would have put just about any SMW in trouble.....now weather or not JT would have got away from or blocked those shots if he wasn't tired is another thing, and may or may not matter. (like said, those shots might have put down Andrade?) So, like you were sayin' Relentless, I too think he's got mental issues that lead to him "gassing". He got some demons in the closet from "lettin' Pavlik off the hook", **** like that, that's prolly kept the man up most nights. In one Ring Mag article, they talked about Killer Instict. It said that in an interview with Lampley, Jermain admitted to having conversations with his close ones about summoning Killer Instinct from with in. (It made a joke about imagining Marvin Hagler havin' to talk to friends about bringin' out Killer Instict). I'd like to see Jermain come back out in his Red Trunks, and be who he was back in the day.:yep He also admitted on the Showtime telecast that once he'd gotten by Hopkins it was as if he'd done what he'd set out to do, and on top of that all the money he then had made. I can relate to that myself. I've gotten some big jobs done, then felt like **** it! I'm a chill for a while and have fun (not focus on business), when really I should have been goin' at it that much harder to get myself in even better position. Different from boxing I know, but same mindset....I think.
This is it exactly. He's in there thinkin' way too much, IMO. He not just in there fightin' off of what he's been trained to do and such from instict, but thinkin' about the demons of his past and worrying too much about them biting him in the ass once again. He needs to just relax, and let his talent flow.
If Jermain Taylor wants to stay in the sport and be competitive there are two things he must do: 1. Make an appointment with a cardiologist and get a complete examination to find out why his stamina takes a sudden dive and correct the diagnosis if possible. 2. Get a better trainer (Nazim, Mayweather, Roach etc.) who can cultivate his sklills and fine tune his flaws. JT had the fight in the bag going into the twelfth round but didn't know to clinch/hold. JT is a former Olympian and an eight year veteran of the pro ranks, he should have known to do this.
He needs to learn how to hold when hes hurt. He just keeps going and gettin hit with more and more shots. If he would have tied up froch for 20 sec. hes the new champ. I also thought that he has asthma problems. Maybe a little mental also. Kelly Pavlik does do alot of damage to his victims. I dont know of any of pavliks victims to do real well after gettin ktfo. Look at Miranda, taylor, locket(retired), etc.
It is a cardio issue. If a fighter is in great shape, he is able to throw lots of punches over the course of the entire fight. The energy management theory is a microcosm of the overall issue.
