I didn't see this before I posted. You've put it pretty much on the money, and Taylor set there and said as much in his pre-fight interview with Froch.:yep
I agree with the post that said that he needs to see a cardiologist. He has major issues with his energy and stamina. If you watch most of his fights, he does very well early on because he is actually throwing punches. Then, he just stops all together. He will go long peroids without throwing anything, and this gives his opponents the chance to get back into the fight because they dont have to worry about him countering. Also, his stamina plays a role in him not being able to ko his opponents when he gets them in trouble. In both the lacy and froch fights, when he hurt them, he was too concerned about not burning out like he did against pavlik, thus, he didnt even really attempt to finish the guys off. He admitted this in a local interview on the radio. He also admitted that he was going to change trainers and was considering going back to pat burns, which I think would be a great move for him.
ermmm he has stamina problems..thats all. If he did'nt have stamina problems.. HE WOULD STILL BE UNDEFEATED.
Its likely genetic. If he hasnt he should go and get his lung capacity checked and see what the results are. My bet is that he has a low lung capacity and cant sustain a long term cardio workout with good results. I know he trains hard and he comes in shape. JT has a lot of skill and good power. He is well spoken and is mostly respectful. He takes care of his family and is a genuine good guy. I think he needs to go to the lab and really get tested for endurance and lung capacity. It is pretty obvious he cant sustain long term fights even when he trains to the best of his ability. This leads me to believe it is just genetic.
Taylor is a very good fighter, make no mistake about it. There is not much stopping him from becoming a great fighter. He should be able to beat fighters like Froch and Pavlik. It's true that during certain parts of a fight, he looks great. Those moments are fleeting, though. 1) JT needs help with his boxing IQ. A guy with his abilities shouldn't be fighting his opponents fights. Sometimes, a person needs to be told exactly what to do in order to get things done. 2) JT needs more of a killer instinct. When he has an opponent down or hurt, he needs to go for the finish. He used to do this early in his career, but after the Hopkins fights, he started taking his foot off the gas. 3) JT needs someone in his corner who can help him remain calm in the ring in order to pace himself. Taylor has a mental hump to get over, and a calming influence in his corner can cut his personal battles in half.
Someone in the know told me he doesn't train hard anymore. When I asked him about Froch-Taylor he told me Taylor doesn't like to train so he gets tired. His stamina is **** now. I think he's afraid to engage because he knows he'll gas.:?
Well one problem is that he's been getting knocked out lately..... On a serious note, I don't think he paces himself like he should for full 12-round fights.
He needs to stop getting caught flush on the jaw with powerful overhand rights. :good Taylor is still a skilled boxer. He'll be back.
Have to admit however that his performances in rematches are better, the rematch with Hopkins I had it clearly for him and the rematch with Pavlik he performed way better but still fell short.
Get rid of Ozell Nelson. The man told JT he needed the last 2 rounds big against Froch. Consequently Jermain got involved in the heated exchange in the 11th. Without that the 12th round would have been different, and we would not have this thread. Instead, we would be talking about Jermain unifying the division. If I were training Jermain, I would have him work with a sports pychologist, and hopefully learn to be more relaxed. I would also work on several stylistic issues. **** the stamina problems. The man is 30 years old. It's highly unlikely that the stamina issues are going to go away. However, with a more relaxed demeanor, and a few stylistic changes, you can work around them. I'd teach him to win rounds with lots of lateral movement, and a blister and move approach during the first 2/3 of a fight. After that, when stamina problems may arise, nuetralize the opponent and win rounds by throwing 2-3 quick shots and clinching. Ya, that's a boring style, but it is often effective. The man needs to hire Nazim Richardson, and study BHop.
Being a big JT fan, here's my take. 1) Stamina is not an issue with JT. He gases because he wastes way too much motion. He's always herky jerky in there and always tight. He needs to relax more. Anyone doing that will gas. 2) Lost of heart. You could almost tell when Froch was battering him in the 12th that he almost gave up before he went down. You would've never seen that in his fights with Hopkins where he always came back with something. Pavlik seems to have taken some of his heart from him. 3) Boxing technique. I don't know if he just doesn't have the brain or he's had bad trainers but along with his herky jerky wasted motion, he's just all over the place with his movements. He has no lateral movement. When he's attacked, he only goes backwards. That's exactly tailor made for a straight ahead guy like Pavlik and Froch. I've never seen JT do a little side step or turn to avoid a shot. Imagine if he could just do that? He also doesn't have the footwork to set up his offense. It's just jab, jab right. Imagine if he had anything close to Hopkin's ability to set up something with his feet? At this point in time, he is what he is. A flawed fighter with great hand speed and gifts but just not able to polish his game.
