Ok Mayweather right now love or hate him is the best pound for pound boxer in the world. One thing that still staggers me is his PPV numbers plus the amount of money he makes. While his last fight didn't do the numbers they were expecting he was fighting somebody I and many others had never heard of. Calzaghe and Jones only got PPV of about 225,000 with Calzaghe being the biggest fighter in the UK at the time and Jones being very well known. When Jones was in his prime he never got numbers close to this neither did Hopkins (apart from the Oscar fight) and they are considered two of the best fighters of the last twenty years. De la Hoya was huge as well but his biggest fight was against Mayweather. De La Hoya's fight against Pac Man while over a million PPV was still less than Mayweather's PPV numbers with Cotto. Aside from Pac Man no other boxer's today come close in a sport that is supposedly dying and for a fighter many consider boring he brings in huge numbers and appears to keep a larger percentage of the money than any fighter in History. Do you think the 24/7 series ( I love the 24/7/All access style shows myself), his unbeaten record and the way he promotes fights really bumps up the numbers with so many people wanting to see him get knocked out. Because the fights themselves or highlights from the fights are not really that exciting esp when you compare them with the fights of Hearns, Haggler and Leonard. But he really does have something that get all the hard core boxing fans watching and the casual fans. I'm even going to see his next fight live for the first time. Lucky for me its not gonna cost me anything cause my mates paying for it. And for once we get something cheaper than you Americans only $39.99!
On his own he doesn't do **** PPV wise, not enough to carry an event on his own, so please relax with the X factor thing. He is not DLH by a long shot. His events sell when positioned with a fighter who brings in his own big PPV fan-base figures, hence the Cotto numbers. Its exactly why his last PPV was not up to expectations, and why he is fighting Canelo and the event has to be padded with Garcia and Mathysee. Mayweather does not have the Charisma of an Ali or a Sugar Ray leonard. Please relax, you ****ing *****.
I'm not sure what his x factor really is, but him and his team really know how to sell a fight story and promote the event. Another important thing is he mainly fights on Mexican holidays, using the Mexican boxing fans as a safety net by putting a boxing event (featuring mexicans) on dates when mexicans are already getting together and celebrating. Another factor to consider is that people may want to see him lose. Before fighting DLH Floyd didn't really attract people to his fights, but after that he made his presence in the media very strong and dislikable to most. Maybe people want to see him fall if he ever does.
I don't love or hate him and I never claimed he had the charisma of Ali or Leonard. But you can't deny his numbers and while he can't get the numbers by himself when he fights someone else its usually the biggest fight of their career and their biggest pay day. Interesting fact about him fighting on Mexican holidays I had no idea about that. Now Manfred is it my name or post you find so funny?
He is bad guy of boxing and people want to see him lose, when he does not lose they get pissed and pay next time hoping for it next. Or he humiliates their favorite boxer and then they want to see him lose.
