I never expected this fight to go beyond 2 or 3 rounds at best. Spinks wasn't a true HW to begin with and feasted on very poor competition after he took the belt from Holmes. He had nothing to trouble Tyson and he knew it. I was very surprised at the number of people who actually thought Spinks could win. People who should've known better. Spinks was an ATG LHW but out of his league big time against a HW like Tyson.

I love all of the monday morning quarterbacking 30 years later. Hilarious. I remember this very well and this fight was not considered anywhere near the blowout some of these armchair psychics are pretending. "I knew it wasnt going more than 2 or 3 rounds" BULL****! Based on what? All the losses on Spinks' record? His glass jaw as evidenced by all of the times he had been knocked down? His horrible amateur and pro pedigree? GTFO. You might have thought Tyson would WIN but few people thought he was going to notch Spinks as one of his fastest KOs and those few would have been looked at as crazy the day before the fight. Had half of these people actually even been alive much less able to remember this period they would have been as excited as the rest of us because it looked like a damn good competetive matchup for THE HW championship between two terrific fighters. The only people who could have possibly thought it would be a blowout would be the people who had drunk the koolaide that early on Tyson and believed he was invincible. There were some of those out there and still are regardless of the cracks Tyson showed in his game but that doesnt mean that Spinks was a dead fish. It just means they had deluded themselves into thinking Tyson was Zeus in human form. Tyson had/has that effect on people.

Because we had the equivalent of that fight in todays era with Klitschko vs Haye.

    Look at the results.

Tyson obliterates ATG Spinks in 90 seconds.

Klitschko goes a safety first timid 12 rounds with the same type of opponent only Spinks is in a different class to Haye.

If that doesn't tell ya what a weak HW era it has been , i don't know what will.

Just because Spinks had a great career and had been unbeaten up to that point it does not mean that his performance on the night was awful and he gave up very easily for such a talented boxer.

Im not actually sure what it was that Tyson did that night that was any different from beating bruce seldon for example.

    :-(

Well, you are a newbie for a reason. Comparing that fight to Bruce Seldon's laydown? Not sure if you're saying Spinks gave up, but Spinks didn't "give up" that night. He came to fight and got his ass handed to him. Watch it again on youtube.

Actually Im not trying to discredit Tyson's performance at all - I think Tyson was actually the greatest opening round fighter of all time and would be dangerous to any heavyweight champion. I just don't understand what he did in this fight that made it his greatest ever performance. I was more impressed with how he did against Trevor Berbick or Larry Holmes. Maybe Spinks simply had no plan or idea of how to beat Tyson?

You do realize that Berbick lost to Holmes and the Holmes lost to Spinks. Tyson decimating Spinks the way he did is exactly why it was so impressive. The only other person who might be expected to be able to do that to Spinks in that era would have been ****ey because he was so much bigger than Spinks and had that huge left hook and look what Spinks did to him. Yeah, it was impressive then and still is if you were around and werent only acquinted with Spinks because of the Tyson fight like most "fans" today.

Some people must have been drinking Spinks Kool-Aid. Believe it or not, many gave Spinks no chance. This fight was hyped beyond the ridiculous level to seem like it was going to be a great match. Money.

Both undefeated. Both claiming the championship. Biggest fight since Frazier-Ali 1. Yeah, I can't see why anyone would want to see such a match.

I new then it would be a massacre. I am not a psychic. As a matter a fact, I had seen Tyson a few times and the Hype was how undefeatable he was.

It was simple really, I saw Tyson tearing Legit ranked heavy weights apart, when they announce a Lt heavy Champion was moving up to face him...LOL ed,

Many of us gave Spinks no chance, And like a previous poster said, is was hyped and I saw right through it. I would like to see what legitimate sportscasters were saying, and what the Vegas odds were on the fight.

And then you gave away your age and ignorance...

Spinks had moved up to HW 3 years earlier.

Did Tyson punch a hole through the wall into Spinks' dressing room before the fight, or was that just a myth?
