If he runs for 12 rounds, he loses the decision, if he tries to stick and move like he did last time, he gets stopped . . . I think all he needs to do is pace the fight differently, just do nothing but move for the first 5 rounds, avoiding Margo's body work and staying fresh, then work on building up some rounds. I think he had such success in the first couple of rounds in the first fight he opened himself up unneccesarily and that contributed to his taking a lot of damage later in the fight
Im just using examples to illustrate a point. This goes to the heart of what I said before I am not comparing the stature and physique of Cotto vs margo when using the examples. All I am saying is that the outcome of the first fight regardless of the severity of the loss does not make for an inevitable and pre-determined outcome of the rematch.
If Miguel Cotto works very hard on developing a Bernard Hopkins style defence, and works very hard on his stamina, he could win a rematch. I don't think he would, but he definitely could. IMO, Cotto boxed beautifully for the first half of the fight, but then his defence and his stamina let him down. There were so many times in that fight that I could not believe that Miguel was choosing to eat uppercuts rather than hold. Holding isn't pretty and we all hate it, but that's one of the reasons that B-Hop is a 43-year-old ATG without a blemish on his face. Cotto has to learn to smother attacks, to hold, to cover himself properly against uppercuts, to roll with punches and counter. If he can get a good defence coach, work hard, watch a lot of Bernard Hopkins on dvd and improve that stamina, a win over Margarito is a possibility.
What the hell are you talking about? Why would the thread title make you think that I am referring to the first fight? You said that he had stamina issues in the Tony, Mosley, Malignaggi and Lovemore N'dou. In the AM fightl was it the bodyshots and the punches that made him slow down or was it the poor conditioning? I think that it was the busted up nose and the shots that Cotto was taken that slowed him down NOT his stamina. So in the Mosley fight he fights effectively of the backfoot so he automatically has stamina issues. The Malignaggi fight. Did you see the weigh-in. Cotto looked like a damn skeleton trying to make that weight. I guess that wouldn't affect how you fight. Lovemore N'dou fight I can't recall that fight of memory for some reason. Was that a slow paced fight? I think you guys are grasping at straws with the stamina thing. Just because Cotto doesn't throw 100 punches per round doesn't make his stamina bad.
Well Im glad that you understood the point. What "other stuff" are you talking about. I made some examples. I explained the reason for making the examples. Some people , like yourself, talked about stamina issues and i made my arguments. What other stuff are you talking about?
I fancy a cotto UD . For the first 5-6 rounds he was making margo miss, using the outside and firing off combinations although maybe he could have tried switching to the body more rather than head hunting. Ok..he tired in the latter rounds and eventually got caught and stopped but i think like others have said with more stamina and patience he could pick margo apart. He has the skills but maybe not the patience or stamina but this could be worked on! Margo comes straight forward an takes a lot of shots flush without flinching but as Williams showed he can be schooled..cotto is obviosuly a totally different fighter to the 'punisher' both in size and in style but if he can stay on the outside, be patient, switch attacks from both the head and the body then i think he can take a UD... heck maybe im thinking the impossible!!
Miguel's pride was hurt when he took a knee to Margarito and eventually went on to lose the fight by stoppage. He feels he needs to avenge the loss, but even he has to admit that it will be a tough task all things considered. It was established in the first fight that he does not have the punching power to hurt Margarito. People saying he didn't have any leverage to throw power shots in their first meeting simply didn't watch the fight. Cotto threw every shot he had, most of which would have stopped or at least wobbled 80% of 147'lb fighters in the world. Margarito is just a cyborg. Miguel Cotto can get a decision if he runs for longer periods, ties his man up at every opportunity, and tries to negate Margarito's uppercuts. Tough task though.
First of all, I was responding to another poster. Hence, it was directed toward that person and they way he interpreted my comments. In other words I wasn't even talking to you. You said that Cotto lacked stamina. I answered and no response from you so how about you answer that part of the post I made directly at you and we can continue to debate the first fight and the possible rematch.
C'mon Big, you can't just ruled out Cotto on the second fight. He has adjustments to make, fine, but I feel that those adjustments are all duable from his part. I mean Cotto is a well rounded / smart / young fighter... At this point I wouldn't be sure as to predict this fight since I'll like to see Cotto returning first but we shouldn't say that he has nooo chance.
