Learn something new everyday...,,you guys are right about Ali being unorthodox so i understand the whole not thechnical thing....well put to those who explained it.
basically straight a straight paper style and the old guys called. A fighter that style that is not center around his or her physical attribute, speed , power or the ability to take a punch but center around how well they've mastered the basics. fighter like Hagler , duran , holems, mike mcallum, these fighter weren't fastest , strongest , of the biggest but what they did deploy was solid boxing skill to over come some of the more physically gifted opponents.
it's this sort of post that makes you so disliked by members of this board. complete and utter ignorance, ban yourself.
Technical boxers: Juan Manuel Marquez, Rafael Marquez, Miguel Cotto (moreso at 140lbs), Israel Vazquez. Cotto at 140 has to be one of the most technical fighters I've ever seen. But these are technical PUNCHERS
Someone who relies on technique rather than whatever physical talent they have. Someone who spends the hours in the gym mastering everything, doing it with precision-the footwork, the pivots, the way to slip and roll and block punches and come back with counters of your own; the way to reel off a combo and then move off. That's what it means to me. Bernard Hopkins jumps to mind when I think of a technical boxer. And it's not for any lack of a chin or balls or heart, it's just because they're intelligent and mastering the game inside out is what lets them win and keeps them healthy.
i dont think there's a clear definition of the term. If you watch how boxing was in the beginning, you'll see its very far from the way they do it now. the stance, movement, etc..I guess, basing from how most analyst use it, a technical fighter is someone who's not flashy, always protective of the head, and throws basic punches. kinda boring if you ask me, but effective.
This might be true for you and many others but certainly not for the whole boxing public. I for my part enjoy a good brawl as well as a masterful display of defensive and offensive skills.
Agreed. A prime Tyson that is, not the guy he would become. Tyson from 85 to about 88 or 89. Ali wasn't technical at all really.
