We all know there were many legendary fighters during this pivotal era in boxing but a lot of the footage is terrible - i feel bad for the fighters of this era because i don't think the films do them justice. The speed is all wrong, the subtle things the fighters were doing are either not properly captured or look cartoonish. Its virtually impossible to properly tell how skilled some of the fighters were. Which filmed fights from this era are of a decent enough quality in your opinion which would allow us to decipher how good some of these greats were?
There are several Burns’ fights that are very clear for the time in their original form and even more so after being cleaned up and time corrected. I think they give us a very good idea of how Burns fought and how good he was in absolute terms and relative to his era. Nice footwork, evasive but ready to drop the fully committed straight right hand bomb when the right opportunities presented themselves. He certainly appeared to be far more busy than most of his contemporaries and the first round KO of Squires was pretty entertaining - not like many of the more slow combustion fights over many rounds during the same era. His fight against Jeannette in 1913, which was made into HD by a YouTuber called Smooth Legends who was unfortunately banned from that platform. However, I downloaded that footage about a year ago to make this highlight (Jeannette-Langford footage in black and white): This content is protected I will try to reupload some of the footage I downloaded but it’s almost 30 minutes long so I’m not sure where to.
That's you? I found your channel a couple months back, looking at a couple vids now, I notice that I even commented on one of em. It's a small world we live in.
