of course he was , but what would 1 expect from a referee who prevented McClellan from finishing Benn while he was doing just that ? had it not for that referee , mcclellan would have stopped benn @ 1-2 rds . 3 max . every time mcclellan got near him d ref stepped between them & separated . That was what bothered me d most . if it wasn't for d separating @ stalling d fight , d rabbit punching would have never even come in2 play .

I had a quick look, I do not think it has been mentioned yet:

The match, that was copied by Chavez and Taylor; LaMotta/DauthuilleII. The difference being Jake and the Frenchman ;) fought over championship distance, rather than a mere 12 rounder. Do not get me wrong, Chavez/TaylorI was an excellent fight. But if it was a 15 rounder finishing the same way, Steele would not of got 7/8th's of the grief he (wrongly) got, and the fight would of not got so much press.

now that makes sense, i do remember the french ref stepping in for no reason especially in the 1st rd to give Benn time to recoup, so the the ref should recieve credit along w Benn for the win as well as Gerald's handicap

and he even did it more than once . that referee & Benn's fouling is what brought him that "win" . and ppl 2day remember it as Benn's rising up 2d occasion & "overcoming adversity" , after all if boxrec/ring magazine consider some1 a winner/list some1 higher than another , then it must b because he was d "better man" at least 4 "that night" .
This is y ali is remembered as "The Greatest" and hopkins as a "great" and future HOF , and sadly he will get in there . If Benn's fouls bothered u , watch some of Bernard , yes , even as soon as d Dennis Milton fight .
Then ask yourself y is he "wearing his trunks up 2 his armpits" ? i guess he knows y .

If we can get the thread back on track......

Davey Hilton coming from way behind to stop Stephan Oulette back in 1999 was a great and obscure fight.

Excellent reference to the late and legendary Jesse James Hughes (who I think would have given Trinidad all sorts of problems in his next fight had he not been murdered...) who came from way behind against Anthony Stephens and Adrian Stone in fantastic and not-seen-enough fights. Luckily they are preserved on YouTube.

The referee ,along with McClellan's corner, bear a heavy responsibility for his death imo.

Harding vs Andries for the LH belt, hopelessly behind and in a mask of blood stops Andries who punched himself out.

The ref was poor was during the Benn-G-man fight; possibly denying a first round KO, but it wasnt him that came out in the 2nd and 3rd landing dozens of powershots on Geralds's head.

showed a lot of flaws in that fight, albeit possibly exacerbated by already having brain issues...yet he looked himself during the first round.

I did not see the fight, but it is worth to mention: Joe Jeanette vs. Sam McVey in Paris 1909. There were many knockdowns in this fight. McVey started very strong, but Jeanette won after 49 rounds.
