Agreed, in no way was Nunn outclassed like Lacy was. Toney did land a beauty though.

:good Think it's a little overrated as a 'great performance' though.

I'm still very impressed by what he accomplished against ancient Holyfield and limited John Ruiz. He was physically smaller than either man, but he made Jones Jr's trip up to heavyweight look average and Hopkins' extended career at middleweight look cowardly by comparison. He doesn't have any of the golden names at that weight, but those second tier fighters ought to count for as much as the first tier fighters his contemporaries were fighting at lower weight classes.

He reminds me of Duran the way he could give up a third of his natural body weight to fighters with a couple inches of height and reach while remaining effective. It really makes you wonder what their career record would look like if they'd stayed closer to their optimum weights of lightweight and super middleweight. Probably have a lot fewer losses. Duran would have Pryor, Arguello, and Mancini. Toney would have fought Hopkins, Calzaghe, Benn, and Eubank.

Answer why you brought up Calzaghe in a thread that has nothing to do with him. It was rhetorical by the way, the answer is butthurt.

James Toney grew on me. I never liked his personality but he was a really good fighter who was willing to fight anybody, even at HW. He had a great chin and did all things well.

He struggled with some good fighters at MW-

Sanderline Williams D10 (their first fight), Merqui Sosa WMD12, Michael Nunn KO11 (Nunn was outboxing him prior to the stoppage), Reggie Johnson WSD12 (Johnson dropped Toney twice and cut him), Mike McCallum D12 and WMD12 (McCallum outlanded Toney by over 100 punches in their rematch), and Dave Tiberi WSD12 (Toney got a gift for sure).

He was good at SMW but I don't give him much credit for his win over Iran Barkley. Barkley had not fought at 168 Lbs. in over a year and 4 out of his previous 5 fights had been at LHW. He was even struggling to make weight at LHW. He had no business fighting at 168 Lbs. the night he fought Toney. After losing to Toney he came back 6 months later at HW. People make too much of his win over Barkley.

I give him a little more credit for his win over Charles Williams but again he does not get full credit. Williams had to make 168 Lbs. Williams fought his entire career as a LHW except for this fight... granted he did fight under 170 Lbs. for his first 6 pro fights (1978-79) but that was before the SMW division existed. Williams was definitely past prime and weight drained. After Toney he went 1-1-1 (1), he took two serious beatings from Merqui Sosa during this stretch.

Toney lost to Montell Griffin x2 and Drake Thadzi at LHW. All 3 of these losses were close.

I liked Toney at CW. He looked really good in his wins over Adolpho Washington KO10, Ramon Garbey W10, and V. Jirov W12... but he did not look good vs. Terry McGroom WMD12.

Even though Holyfield was 150 years old Toney does deserve some credit for beating him. Only Bowe and Toney were able to stop him. Holyfield had his moments early but eventually Toney took over.

He looked good in his win over John Ruiz but the verdict was later changed to a NC due to Toney testing positive for a banned substance.

He looked good vs. Guinn and Rahman as well.

Toney was robbed in his first fight with Sam Peter, Peter did win the rematch.

I'd say his best wins were Nunn and McCallum.

I would have liked to have seen Toney vs. Byrd or a rematch with Jones at HW.

I watched the Nunn fight last week. Nunn wasn't outboxing Toney. Why are people saying that? It was very competitive. The announcers were riding Nunn's nuts a little at the start because he was the bigger name at the time and Toney wasn't very well known, but the exchanges were pretty even. I wasn't scoring the fight since I knew it ended by knockout, but my lingering impression was that Toney was being more accurate and more elusive but that Nunn was throwing more and landing the same number of punches.

I had Nunn ahead but it was far from as one sided as many think, from about the 8th onwards Toney was wearing Nunn down with body and set up the KO.
