I box at a very low level and I have respect for most people who get in the ring.

What I can't understand is people on this forum calling decent boxers bums or tomato cans.

When a boxer turns pro they pretty much fight journeymen who I would describe as maybe an older fighter or a relatively younger fighter but who does not have the skills, technique or whatever to compete at the top. I wouldn't, but I can understand people saying that these fighters are bums or cans.

What I don't understand is when people call good fighters, who fight at the top or near the top, being called bums. When i started boxing again it really humbled me. The amount of skill and dedication it takes to get even near the top is incredible and I didn't see it until I started boxing. Which is why I don't call average or good boxers bums.

So my question is? Is it possible to be a good fighter (somebody who doesn't win a belt) and not be a bum?

On here a bum is anyone with a loss on their record, no matter how many world titles they might have won.
    No boxer is a bum.

I can understand people calling Audley a bum but I wouldn't. I think he's an average fighter but i think the reason he gets flak is because people think he's arrogant but does that make him a bum?

Buttocks (shortened to bum) - are two rounded portions of the anatomy, located on the posterior of the pelvic region of apes and humans, and many other bipeds or quadrupeds, and comprise a layer of fat superimposed on the gluteus maximus and gluteus medius muscles. Physiologically, the buttocks enable weight to be taken off the feet while sitting. In many cultures, they play a role in s3xual attraction. Many cultures have also used them as a safe target for corporal punishment. There are several connotations of buttocks in art, fashion, culture and humor, and the English language is replete with many popular synonyms. In humans they are located between the lower back and the perineum.

    Artur Szpilka.

In my opinion, a bum is someone who was extremly hyped but got exposed at the end against below average competition. He is probably the biggest bum in boxing history because of that reason. I wouldn't call Harrisomn or Price bums. Both fought decent opponents, Audley was European champ, Price lost against Thompson who's still pretty tough and the best US heavyweight. Furthermore, he almost won the rematch in the second round.

So, back to Szpilka, the definition of a bum.

He was extremly hyped by Poles. They thought he is a god, they even called him "White Mike Tyson". He's just a featherfisted, fat CW who couldn't knock out Owen Beck, who was down twice against Mike Mollo, against Saulsberry and who was schooled by McCline and Minto. Damn, Minto even won that fight in my opinion. McCline broke his jaw. Look what Mago and Arreola did to McCline.

Eventually, Szpilka lost his last fight against a man, who didn't enter a boxing gym before the age of 25 years.:rofl
Bryant Jennings is a good sportsman, a tough guy, but he is not a boxer FFS. Everyone who wants to achieve something in this sports must be able to win against Jennings.

For me a bum is someone who could have been very good or great but decided to throw it all away.

A bum is definitely not a fighter who gets beat , we all fail.

    Peace.

A bum, in my opinion, is someone with a negative record or close to one. Like 10-15 or 21-15.

    Kelly Pavlik
    Ricky Hatton

Both could have been very very good, but didn't dedicate the talents they had and now look shocking at 35.

    A homeless person.

I never call fighters "bums", unless it was literally true.

Jack Dempsey and Howard Eastman were bums.

Boxing is the rare professional sport where if you are better than 90% of your competitors, you "suck" and you're a "bum".
