I thought in order to a world championship fight to be called a unification fight both of the fighters must each hold at least one of the 4 main acknowledged world championship belts (WBC, WBA, IBF and WBO) and both of these belts were being defended on the night. Is this an accurate statement?

The reason I question it is because the upcoming Malignaggi title defence against Hatton is being billed as "140-POUND WORLD TITLE UNIFICATION BOUT". Ricky holds the pointless IBO title and the Ring Magazine belt. I would not therefore have thought that you would be able to class this as a unification fight.

I also now wonder whether Hatton will try to enter the ring second when usually this is the honour of the champion.

Regardless they both hold titles so they are going to call it a unification fight.

We laugh at the IBO title but everyone used to laugh at the WBO title not too long back.

Nah Hatton likes to think that his IBO and Ring belts actually mean something, god awful propaganda.

Malignaggi holds the IBF, and Hatton holds the Ring (worth more then the lot, imo), and IBO titles. Are the ring, and IBO titles realistically worth any less the WBO.

Having said that I thought unification was say the WBA belt, plus one of the other three (or another combination of the 4).

Personally I think only undisputed matches should get mentioned. Cleaning out a division, and unifying two alphabet belts are often different things; but nearly always get linked.

It is weird - Hatton is challenger for the IBF title (which really is his by right) whilst Paulie is challenging for the right to become the 140lb champion.

I suppose you could define alphabets as titles, whilst the linear could be termed as championships.

i.e. nobody says Felix Sturm is the middleweight champion - they would say he holds the WBA (?) title - but if Pavlik is stripped for any reason (as Hatton was) he would still be middleweight champion.

There was a piece in Boxing Monthly about three months ago in respect of Ring championships - and when they first awarded them the criteria was for undisputed champs (Tszyu, Lewis, RJJ etc at the time) or guys clearly the BEST in their weight class (no examples sorry) rather than the guy who holds the stronger LINEAR claim - hence the constant argument about Erdei or Calzaghe being LHW champion.

I suppose Erdei has the stronger linear claim, but has never held a genuine top 3 title and has fought a succession of bums - whilst Joe has been the best SMW in the world for years (a titleholder since 06) and moved up in weight to take on the CONSENSUS #1 in Hopkins.

Make of that what you will - everyone has a different opinion.

Look it up in the dictionary, it's quite simple, if you 'unify' 2 entities

Why would the WBC, WBA, IBF and WBO have the divine right to unify?

Still, that said, these alphabet titles are a joke and Hatton ought to drop this IBO ****.

Any "titles" can be unified, its simply a matter of actually knowing what the word unification means.

That doesn't mean you have to give credence to them. For me its any of the big 1 (WBO) or the other 3 (WBA, IBF, WBC)

The Ring belt is not worth **** since Golden Boy bought it.

I think the Ring belt could be worth something if it imposed mandatory challengers - but then you may just end up with another alphabet type title.

The first alphabet that begins ranking the other's champions (of the big 3 I mean) would clean up to be honest.

They are currently cartelling by not ranking the others champs to stay in existence.

    Barrera had the best idea

After he made his name as WBO Super Bantamweight Champion

he did go on and win IBO Featherweight title

    WBC Featherweight title

    and WBC Super Featherweight title

but he went through a period where he shunned the titles as he was a big enough name to do without the nonense and people appricated his fights didnt need their official acknowledgement

    PEOPLES CHAMPION

I am sure Ricky needed the IBO title to sell 58000 tickets

Why not dump the 9 carat gold & vinyl IBO title and knock a quid off the ticket prices - there is a peoples champ!

The Sky preview made me smile.....

Ricky Hatton defends his IBO light welterweight title - when in truth everybody knew Hatton was fighting for his career

    Some Peoples Champion Hatton is

you have to pay £14.95 to see him in a **** fight

**** that - not interested - Hatton is nothing in this sport now - Mayweather finished him off as a serious fighter - all he is doing now is topping up his pension

for those of you who say Hatton should retire beofre he gets hurt - agreed totally he is a shot fighter

    however

dont be surprised at all why Hatton is fighting on

You have to understand the man - which I do

he is fighting on for one more thing

    Glory???? - No

    Fame??? - NO

Legacy - secure his place in hall of fame? - NO

Still some top fighters he wants to prove himself against -? Paulie is a definete NO

he is fighting on for one thing

    £££££££££££££££££££$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$££££££££££££££££££££££$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$££££££££££££££££££££$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

greedy ****s like Ray and Ricky Hatton want to milk every last penny out of Rickys fanbase before it is all over

    "to secure Campbells future"

    and

"make sure I got enough in my pension for when I retire"

    its just greed

Hattons intentions for doing alot of the things he does have never been honourable

its all been motivated by money and material things

but Hatton puts a PR spin on everything to disgusie all this

this is why I dislike him

he is not the nice fan loving peoples champion he would have you believe

he is a money grabbing conman
