For me face of boxing is pretty much just somebody who is popular that represents what the sport is all about. Typically you have to be the best or one of the 4/5 best guys in the sport and somebody who is taking on big time fights bringing attention to the sport as well.. don’t think style matters as the money man has had different styles and attributes but if you not good enough to be or be considered one of the very best in the sport.. you not ever gonna be the face of the sport. Right now face of boxing is Canelo
"Face of boxing" is someone notable enough in the sport they are known and recognized well outside of boxing circles. Ali and Mike Tyson are the best examples (modern era) of that. Floyd Mayweather and to a lesser extent Manny Pacquaio were the last boxers to approximate that. Some non-boxing fans have heard of Canelo but most wouldn't necessarily pick him out of a crowd, same goes for Tyson Fury, AJ (outside the UK), Tank and Garcia, Wilder etc. I wouldn't proclaim any singular fighter right now the "face of boxing". Frankly Jake Paul is a bigger mainstream name than most of them.
The ones that transcend the sport. Ali, Tyson, Leonard, Mayweather, Oscar De LA Hoya all at some point did to varying degrees.
According to social media it is now Tank Davis for the casuals. They should get him to host the Oscars or the Golden Globes.
Not sure I get your question but my point is boxing at the present doesn't have any transcending stars. Even if you don't follow basketball you've probably heard the name LeBron James, or Lionel Messi for soccer/football, Boxing doesn't have that anymore. Because the top stars in boxing avoid fighting each other so much now, it's made the sport niche and not mainstream. The reason Tank-Garcia was so big is because it was rare that two up and coming "stars" decided to fight, even though they aren't even the best in their class.
Is the face of boxing also the cash cow or is that something different? the reason I ask that question is because AJ could have been considered a cash Cow but I don’t consider him the face of boxing…. I think the Face of boxing also has to be the cash cow See: Muhammed Ali Sugar Ray Leonard Mike Tyson Oscar De La Hoya Floyd Mayweather Canelo in a couple of years I can See Tank as the cash cow / face of boxing as well.
Yeh, I think this term is mostly applicable to someone who makes the transition into the mainstream media. Basically, crosses over into the sports pages/sections ... and resonates with people who are into other sports but take an interest in boxing at times. The inter-net has fragmented the (sports) news media, but it still has its core dominant players. Connecting with these people is kind of important because it draws in new fans who get more and more interested over time. Unfortunately, the HW division, which more often than not, has most the purchase with general sports fans, is replete with inactive divas who duck the best of their peers, and perform more outside the ring than within it. The 'Face of Boxing' presents a product to engage with for casuals but also young people who have a lot of different sports to choose from. When I was young, outside of Mike Tyson, I watched quite a few fights involving the 'Faces of Boxing' (Fenech, Harding, Tszyu, Green, etc) in my own country which I knew were happening because our local media covered them.
Personally I feel like if all theses guys started fighting each other and fighting consistently it would all figure itself out naturally, you don’t have to win every fight and of course every single fight not gonna be top top quality, but if you can win the majority and you consistently putting on big time matches. You would have more interest I mean not even going far back in 2012 Rigenduex-Donaire did good numbers brought out hella stars and that was on free TV.. gotta make the fights a loss don’t matter as much as not fighting does.
'that guy' can be easily translated to 'that douche' in many a context. I mean real value for boxing i.e. getting the best fights made, giving fans the fights that they want which are often the obvious matchups. Does the 'face of boxing' bring new fans into this realm or is it yet another distraction away from what should be done for the benefit of boxing? I don't mean value as in easy financial gains.
