Hi Buddy. Good example, along similar lines the left hook DeMarco hit Basilio with in their first fight would have taken down LHWs !!!! the fight was billed as " the best punch in the division, against the best chin " how Carmen stayed upright is a mystery, the snapshot seconds after it landed shows Basilios legs so wide, you could drive a car through, what a fighter he was, tough, tenacious , hard as nails, in some of the close ups, it looks like his skin has been stretched over his bones, Dundee is on record saying he was the fittest fighter he handled, meticulous about his spartan like training routine, what a contrast when he fought Robinson, on the one hand we have the smooth, debonair, hair slicked down man about town, up against the craggy, rough hewn, onion farmer, when told at the weigh in for their first fight that out of 50 writers 49 picked Robinson, he shot back " well 49 of em are wrong " sounds about right...... stay safe jabber.
That sure was a brief 'powercut' moment, then power was restored. Sad to think too many punches to Mr Quarrys head as tough as it was, brought about his sad demise at age of 53, suffering from dementia pugilistica. The referee of course for this fight was the great Joe Louis
I remember that shot Basilio took, that's a good example too. Yes, (49 of them are wrong)... Haha, that was Carmen for sure. That was in that documentary, "Boxing's Little Giants". I always liked Basilio for all the reasons you mentioned. Always in top shape. He would run in snowstorms and come back looking looking like a snowman. All the best Mike....
Hi Buddy. Appreciate your polite and informative reply, Basilio has long been one of my favs, interestingly enough, my all time fav is Napoles, what a good match up these two, the battle of the bleeders ! stay safe jabber, chat again.
Hi Mike, whenever I think of Basilio, I think of a guy that would never quit. Always in superb shape. Might not have been the most talented, but he made himself great with sheer will. Napoles was top notch, I liked his style, very smooth boxer... All the best to you as well, be safe...
Hi Buddy. Nice to hear from you jabber, and you are on the money with Basilio, achieved greatness out of sheer willpower, a monk like approach to training, and a disdain for punishment, he fought better boxers, and bigger punchers, but they were grist to his mill, the 1st Robinson fight was the matador versus the bull, only on that rare occasion, the bull won, a truly exceptional fighter, that would have been more than a handful for even the very best. keep in touch hombre.
