What is the historical significance of Klitschko vs. Povetkin?

It is rare to see two Olympic gold medal winners square off as professionals for the Ring Magazine title.

Povetkin is hardly a flash in the pan. He has been highly ranked for years, and comes in the fight un-defeated.

It's very historically significant. There have been no fights in heavyweight history that poses two olympic SUPER heavyweight gold medalists against one another. When you factor in one is the Lineal Heavyweight Champion of the world and the other is the Ring Magazine # 1 contender plus WBA heavyweight title, this makes for a great matchup. Povetkin comes to fight. He has a good skill set, good punching skills, nice chin, and solid resume. Wlad hasn't faced a combination puncher like this before. I have a feeling this will be an exciting fight. Wlad will really step up in this fight and show how legendary he is by outboxing povetkin, weathering any storm that might come his way, and finishing povetkin off late. I think Povetkin will have his moments, but Wlad will elevate his skills to another level and eventually break down povetkin. I see Wlads jab having a ton of success in this fight. We will see a top chess match in here, with a few haymakers being landed. Povetkin will taste the canvas for the first time in this fight.

I think it is more a moping up exercise than an era changing fight.

Wlad has rounded up most of the key players in the division i.e Byrd, Ibragimov, Peter. Chagaev, Haye, and Povetkin is the biggest outstanding omission apart from his brother.

Of course if Povetkin should pull off the upset, then it is the end of an era!

Lewis vs Biggs? werent they both superheavy gold medalists?
    Or was Lewis regular Heavyweight?
Anyway Ive only read articles and such on Povetkin, never
actually saw him fight. Im hoping for a great
fight and hope that this will be Wlad's best competition.
Cant see any other outcome than a KO for Wlad.

Nothing about it has any particularly special historical significance.MAybe that will be different after the fight if someone gets decapitated by a punch or dies of a massive heart attack.

They were in fact both Olympic Super Heavy Gold Medalists, but that was about 22 years ago so it is rare it seems.

But I suppose Biggs being such a bust by that point having lost 4 of his late 8 fights took some luster off that one.

Povetkin is an entertaining scrapper, not much defense and lacking punching power, but he throws good combinations in bunches and works well off the jab. Povetkin vs Huck is a very fun fight worth watching though Povetkin isn't in the best shape for it.

i don't think there is any "historical significance" to this fight at all. it just looks better than it is based on Wlad fighting a load of crap these last couple of years.

Povetkin is a solid competitor, no doubt. but he isn't of the "special" variety in the slightest.

a very good Heavyweight fight where Wlad is pretty much a dead cert to win. nothing more.

Most historically important fight since Louis-Schmeling II.

Name one great fighter Povetkin has beaten? Olympic gold medalist is fine but means nothing as a pro. He is 34 years old and has had only 26 bouts. Biggest wins are against a shot Byrd and a shot Rahman. He has beaten a host of European hwts....not very impressive. Anyone who hits Wlad solid can knock him out but watching Povetkin fight I don't see the skills required to get to a tall hwt like Wlad.

Both men are in top form and Povetkin is also a gold medal winner and as a pro an aggressive inside fighter who throws combo's

Vlad has to try and keep the range use his jab & foot movement but let the right hand go when he see an opening.

Povetkin's best chance is to use pressure and try and tire Vlad and land something body and head, he know this fight is everything for him

This may turn out to be a fight where the corner advice is key

None as far as Im concerned. This is a run of the mill defence. No better and no worse than several others Wlad has been in.

You curmudgeons would be saying that Louis Schmeling II was nothing compared to Root-Hart.

    Go check yourselfs.
