Of course there's a lot of historical significance. Even people who say otherwise know that they're wrong.

It's the first time ever 2 Olympic Super Heavyweight gold medalists fighting for the world title. One of the most dominant champions in history taking on the biggest Russian boxing star in Moscow. Not to mention Povetkin being undefeated and the most successful amateur heavyweight since the fall of Soviet Union. The money in this fight is also enormous.

If Povetkin wins, the heavyweight scene will probably move from Germany to Russia. It will be very hard to move it back to the US for many reasons. Think about it.

I read the fight will be broadcast to 150 nations. By my guess at least 75 million people will be watching it. This is the type of fight that not only makes headlines, but attracts new amateur boxers and fans!

I agree with Stallion. If Povetkin wins, the heavyweight scene will shift more toward Russia.

Haye was chicken &h^t. Povetkin takes a much better punch, and won't withdraw like Haye did.

Povetkin might not make the distance, but he'll land a lot more than Haye did.

Objectively Povetkin is a quality opponent, and would have been in any era. He was the most dominant amateur super heavyweight in history. He is undefeated with wins against two former champs, Byrd and Chagaev, with wins against sold opponents in Chambers, Donald and Marco Huck.

The ability and dominance of Klitschko is the only thing that is really taking the shine off of this fight. Povetkin is as good of a challenger as any, and while this fight isn't the fight of an era, I guess you could argue that Klitschko vs. Haye was Wladimir's Lewis vs. Tyson, he is still a real quality foe.

Yes but in the narrow context of the current heavyweight picture dating back to last millennium, it's relatively momentous. :!:

I see this Pov as better than Haye. Haye fought scared but I can only see Pov trying to get inside with power punches. There is defo a fair chance for him, not great, but fair.

A lot of The Sun reading casuals watched the fight in the uk but so what? 50 years from now people will look at Wlad's easy win over Haye as no greater an achievement that his schooling over Ibragimov.

Povetkin is the best boxer apart from Klitschkos, together with Haye and maybe Pulev. This is the historical significance.

Should anyone defeat Wladimir, that would be historicaly significant automaticly.

If that is the case, does Lewis vs. Tyson not register on Lewis' ledger as a big win?

Devil's advocate: Arguably it wasn't as Tyson was definitely past it.
