What's the longest time a round has gone past 3 minutes whether it be due to a timekeeper error or something else.
How did the timekeeper let that happen? Boxrec seems to contradict itself, indicating the fight as having ended at 3.03 m but then noting below there was “controversy” because the round was 4 minutes long. The term controversy implies opposing views - there’s nothing controversial about the back and white fact of a round having gone far too long - it was flat out wrong. I guess the so called “controversy” was how they dealt with it - upholding the KO win for Page when it should’ve been ruled an NC or what not.
This might be our answer. I can think of fights that went beyond 10-20 seconds over 3 mins but nothing anywhere close to 48 seconds. That's an incredible blunder. welcome to the forum btw.
I suppose the longest round would have taken place under London Prize Ring rules, where rounds ended when a boxer was knocked down (which include putting someone down with wrestling tactics). But I have no idea what round of what fight was the longest.
@Rubber Glove Sandwich Thank you. Round 8 of Page Coetzee is on YouTube, and Coetzee was counted out right at about 4 minutes in. No idea how that possibly could have happened. That was a World title fight as well. Round 2 of Simon Brown vs. Jorge Maysonet went a little long as well. According to Gil Clancy, who was one of the announcers for that fight, they stopped the clock when Maysonet was knocked down for whatever reason, causing the round to go maybe 10-15 seconds long. That was very costly for Maysonet who was getting bombed at the end of that round. Have to mention a timekeeper error cutting the round short. Bobby Czyz was ahead on the cards against Uriah Grant, but was in deep trouble in the 10th & final round when he was saved by the bell 2 minutes into the round, possibly stealing a win from Grant. Czyz took a narrow UD.
I think the reference here is official 3 minute rounds. I thought of the LPR also. I think ending a round could also simply involve taking a knee (even voluntarily I believe) but I’m not 100% on that. I once did a calc on the 75 round Sullivan vs Kilrain fight. Measuring the rounds against the duration given (and allowing for rest periods and the max time allowed to “toe the line”) I think the average round came in well under 3 minutes. I think I also worked it out without rest periods and it was still notably under 3 mins per round. I guess in older times with less stringent regulation, there could’ve been a number of extended rounds (that were never officially confirmed) that we’ll never know about. Conversely, we could also try to determine the shortest “3 minute round” and compare it to the longest round for a max. spread.
We just had a bad one on the Uysk vs Joshua II undercard. Round eight of Rivera vs Badou Jack went 3 minutes and 58 seconds due to time keeper error. Definitely had an impact on the decision as Rivera was ahead but Jack was coming on strong at the end and did a lot of damage to Rivera in that round. Worst I have seen since Page vs Coetzee.
The last round of Kirkland Laing's European welterweight title defence against Patrizio Oliva in Italy lasted 4min 37sec. Harry Carpenter's commentary is hilarious at times.
Great call! The ref stepped in so many times - were they stopping the clock each and every time? Apparently so. Upon yet another ref intervention the clock comes up on screen to show 17 secs left - and the “17” just flickers in and out without incrementally reducing down while the ref go through his histrionics before waving them back on. Unreal. This content is protected
