I wouldn't say that was bad in any way. Hatton wanted to apply his wrestling and cheating tactics which he's cheered for in England.
I just love myth about Hatton vs FLoyd Floyd is leagues above Hatton and he stopped him and would beat him 100 times in a row, dont be deluded Ricky was good but nowhere near Floyd or Pacs level!
Khan and Peterson is a recent one that comes to mind. I felt the referee was refusing to separate the fighters, even after long clinches, because it REALLY favoured Peterson to be inside. He also kept warning Khan for pushing. Peterson wanted to get in close, grab Khan and beat him up. All he had to do was kind of grab a hold of Khan at the first opportunity and then the fight was where he wanted, and Khan wasn't allowed to push him off. For an outside fighter "punch your way out of it" is a bit unfair.
Mayweather/Hatton fight. Cortez ruined it. Everybody knew Hatton was up against it big time...he was a big underdog but a live one...cortez basically stopped him doing his work. People can say his tactics were illegal or cheating or whatever but the reason the fight was such an intriguing fight was because of the match up of the two styles. No point having the fight if one of them cant impose their style. Cortez was definetely influenced that night to the point of completely ruining the fight. It became obvious that mayweather was the better fighter in there but he definetely got help from cortez along the way that wasn't even needed which made it worse. Especially the way he reffed the calzaghe/hopkins fight. Seen loads of home cooking bias....hatton/tyzsu for example comes to mind. Which was bad ref clearly favoured the home fighter to an extent like a lot of them do but not to the stage of ruining the fight like cortez. All the countrys at it thats why home advantage is such a big deal....Brits bad for it and our judges. Dont think you'll get too many brits disagreeing with critism of dave paris etc etc. Also people mentioning the khan v peterson fight sure khan constantly pushing after warning after warning actually thought it was a good refereeing performance but not seen it in a while. But mayweather/hatton....joe cortez for me all day long. Could have been a great great fight. Build up was incredible deserved a referee that was impartial to both fighters for me.
cant believe 5 pages in and nobody mentioned Tyson Lewis...Eddie Cotton was blatantly trying to help Tyson in the first 2 or 3 rounds. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jZLbZpqNNB4
Sure their was a danny williams fight a good few years back that was the worst i ve seen. Cant remember who he was fighting. But would have made the cleverly carry back look like just a friendly gesture from the ref...he was that bad.
The opinions of Brittards in regards to this topic should be nullified/void. They alone have 9/10 of the top most corrupt referees/judges in the sport. :rofl
A lot of those stoppages were made by American referees. Besides, as you know, the 'highlight reel' is deliberately edited to make Joe look bad. Most of the stoppages were legitimate. The others never affected the outcome of the fight.
