Yep. A fighter can get by without great power, awesome speed, endless stamina etc. But you will not get by in boxing without a chin because you will get hit. Simple really.

you cannot have one of these as the most important, the most important changes from fight to fight depending on your opponent

ie, against a hard hitting opponent chin might be the most important followed by reactions

against a slick southpaw power and stamina are most important

    stamina and chin

Youve got to be in good shape and have stamina or you will never get anywhere. If youve ever seen those boxing pros vs joes some of the average joes collapsed after a round or two of light sparring because they were not in condition for it. While it is fun to make fun of the fat guys like Toney or Sanders, they still have stamina and are still in much better shape than their appearance would indicate. If you dont have stamina you can never make it in boxing. See the trailer park series for reference.

    Chin
Guys like Patterson, Hearns and Wladimir, their chins are not nearly as bad as people make it out to be. They got back up and kept trying didnt they? The guys with the worse chins we never saw because they never made it anywhere in boxing.

True - but we are asked to pick just one attribute over others.

We can't vary it from fight to fight as we would desire.

I pick chin cause it's probably the most essential basic facet you'll want to possess, outside of a good punch.

    Poll is up!:good

I started this thread thinking most here underrate chin, toughness and stamina, and overrate speed and reactions, but it seems I was wrong, and I'm glad!

mental toughness is one BIG quality that sets apart the good from the great

without a doubt, all of the THE GREATS, ATG'S, HALL OF FAMER'S check it

out, they all had mental toughness

most mexicans seem to be born with this trait

and i know it is not a physical quality im sorry, i just had to add it

like mentioned above, if you have a glass jaw, are you tough enough to regroup and not give up

if your gassed and have no energy left in the tank are you tough enough to keep going

    are you tough enough ?!

    LOL lol

I would say that the most important quality for a fighter is their reflexes. Their reflexes help them with everything physical in the ring.

    Very good thread!

But I guess you should have made it a multiple choice poll... I mean, being great in just one of all those attributes you mention, but average or below average in the rest, doesn't really make you a good fighter.

Btw I can't choose only one, as I think some of those qualities are equally important. My picks would be toughness, stamina and speed, with strength a close second. :D

If I had made it multiple choice, people would have voted for many if not most or all of them. I wanted to put people on the spot. There can only be one!:bart

...and the correct answer is obvious!:deal :D

A fighter needs MANY of those attributes to be very good or great. Can you argue that most of them aren't equally important?

Anyway, I voted for stamina, but I repeat, only one of those qualities means nothing by itself. :deal

    Stamina.

Without stamina nothing else counts for ****, but fights can be won on stamina alone.

But what does stamina mean when you've just been rocked by a jab in the first round and your legs are buckling all over the place?
