What is the one most important factor when rating a boxer pound-for-pound?

Actual ability, and everything else far behind that.

 

For me, achievements and resume are basically the same thing.

Resume includes achievements.

That isn't really my problem, as I don't do all time rankings. :yep

Keeping tabs on the sport in my own time, and having at least a basic working knowledge of the preceding few generations, is as much time as I'm willing to commit. If I was independently wealthy and/or there were more hours in the day it might be different.

 

It should be wholly based on ability, skills and fighting style - as in, if they were the same weight and punch power carried or dopped respectively (perhaps also speed too) then who are the best fighters.

Resume/achievements help show off such skills by providing a benchmark against which to measure them.

who did this fighter fought and beat to become a P4P candidate.
unlike some other fighters before like Pongsalek Wonjongkam
he keeps on fighting nobodies and defending his belt against bums etc.
and achieved a record of title defenses..

 

ok then.... based on ability who would ya'll have as #1 p4p?...would it be any different?

 

for me there are two lists

p4p, and atg

p4p - irrespective of weight - who is the best fighter on the planet. if weight was not an issue, which fighter would be the best fighter ever to lace up gloves. this is where people like harry greb - who due to his resume, for me, will be ranked higher on this list, than the ATG list.

atg - which boxer has achieved the most - this takes into account resume, achievements - distinguish between the two if you want - some people see a difference, others don't; this is where people like henry armstrong will find themselves ranked higher - due to his achievements in holding three weight championships simultaneously.

It's incredible how few understand this fairly simple concept. The question is never "who is the most accomplished boxer?" or "who fought the better fighters?". Those are different questions which can be considered in their own right.
