Networks always give excuses why the numbers are delayed yet it took less than 5 days to get Mayweather/Canelo numbers. So it's easier to count when there is more? Have late numbers ever come in that were actually good? Not that I can remember. If it takes longer than 10 days, we get it... You're deciding by how much to fabricate the numbers whether it be Arum or GBP.
Why do you care so much about numbers in the first place? The amount of attention PPV figures get is so disproportional it's unreal.
Mayweather uses it as a leverage in negotiations but in Pacquiao's case, to make it as his (Floyd)reason not to fight Pac.
I actually hope every single PPV event falls short, so we can get rid of that crap. Back to the days when all fights were on free tv channels, or premium channels at least. Then the viewing numbers will go up again (massively), and boxing can maybe even return to be a mainstream sport.
If it were up to me, PPV would be long gone. It does nothing but kill the sport. BUT, since this seems to be such a huge subject on this forum, I'm posing the question to those who keep bringing it up. It's really Floyd and Pac fans that care. What is the point of lying though? Some guy in the industry comes out and leaks that it did XXX number, so the fans of that fighter call bs (if it's bad), and the other fanbase use it to discredit the guy. My point is... How f*cking sad is the state of boxing when we can't even get honesty in something as simple as "How many people watched?" It's pathetic.
Agree completely. How the h*ll else are you supposed to attract new fans? FNF's are usually terrible.... I watch maybe one every two months and I consider myself a decent fan. I watch the HBO and Sho fights, but not everyone has those channels and their nut huggery is beyond annoying. I watch with no sound actually... it's that bad.
Before PPV, there was closed circuit boxing matches which I believe have been around since the forties. Boxing fans have paid to see high quality championship fights for a long time. The problem today is that we are fed fights that are not worthy of ppv status but being fans, we pay for these fights even though they should be on premium television at best.
Again, I don't expect idiots like you to understand or comprehend numbers in general never mind simple boxing PPV numbers. These numbers are very important to look into, analyze and discuss because viewing these numbers you would know what future fights are possible and what are not. Better yet, when numbers appear lower than expected there will be a lot of pressure on a big name fighter, Mayweather for example, to fight a live fan friendly opponent rather than a handpicked safe one. Why do you think numbers can be delayed, exaggerated or even completely lied about?. Because the people releasing these numbers know that experts or fans with brains will analyze such numbers and predict what future fights to expect. Why did the UFC lie for years about their PPV earnings?, to make Boxing look bad and many fans bought into it and brag about these numbers to this very day. Sure numbers may be meaningless to simpletons but in general they're very important. Don't expect Mayweather to rematch Maidana if the PPV numbers for the first fight were really(as the rumors suggest) low, see how it was easy to guess why Mayweather won't fight Maidana again thanks to the PPV numbers?
Nice post! Your proof is the amount of PPV so far this year. Canelo/ Angulo on PPV?? 2 losers? WTF? That is SAD. Pac/Rios??? Are you kidding me? This is terrible. (Yes I know Pac Rios wasn't this year...it's just a terrible PPV)
I remember seeing Hearns v Leonard 1, Hagler v Hearns and Hagler v Leonard closed circuit at the theater and everyone in the audience felt they got more than their moneys worth. Back in those days the closed circuit matches were infrequent but when there was one, it was worth the money. Nowadays with all these belts and sanctioning bodies, the quality of televised boxing is diluted and we have to pay to see fights that should be on ESPN. Closed circuit boxing matches used to be an event, now promoters want to put barroom fights on ppv.
I disagree, despite Floyd-Maidana doing worse than expected numbers, they will make a rematch because nobody gave Chino a chance to win a single round, much less make Floyd work for the W for the first time in ages, people might buy into Chino giving him a hard fight a second time around personally I don't give a **** about PPV numbers, both Floyd and Pac have done lower than expected numbers in their last fights, and the fans still wont get what they want, it has no relevence to who they will fight next, Pac will face Marquez a fifth time, Bradley a third time or Alvarado, and Floyd will pick an Al Haymon fighter
