Tragically, most of the folks on this board have never laced up a pair in their lives. So, taking advice from them is probably not a good idea. I would add that it probably isn't such a great idea to just watch the great jabbers. Go to a gym and have someone show you the proper technique. The jab is a simple punch, but it takes an awful lot of work. It is all about timing. If you practise in a mirror make certain that you step with the punch and that your are reaches almost full extension (don't extend all the way you'll hurt your elbow) when your foot comes down. The reason for this is simple: if you step first, you opponent will see it and he'll know whats coming. Also, you can turn your hip a bit to give the blow more power. And remember to keep you elbows down and close to your body.

It depends on the type of jab you plan on having. Some boxers have a very strong solid jab (Holmes, Kessler), others have a flickering fast jab (Ali, Hearns), and others use it as a range finder (Tszyu). Another thing to keep in mind is to keep your right up when you throw your jab, often times people tend to drop their right (or left if they are southpaws) when snapping the jab, which leaves you open for a counter.

Use a P4P fighter like Paul Williams as your example. Whenever you throw a punch stick your chin out and attempt to block any counter punch with your face.

That's what he did and it helped him beat Martinez.

    What's a jab?
    How much does it weigh?

I'd say over the shoulder at a 45 degree angle.

Yup. Trying to learn without proper instruction will just ingrain bad habits that someone will have to drill out of you later.

sounds like you might be young , when I started boxing I went to my local gym , you cannot really learn it from a book as with any sport it is a dynamic motion. A good amature coach will give you the right advice, and dont be put off I was a small kid , but was quick , boxing is for athletes .
