    Here are my tips.

    1. Learn the proper stance first. Turn sideways to the bag. Turn 45 degrees on the balls of your feet. Right fist level with right cheekbone, left fist to left eyebrow.

    2. From there, the left comes out from the shoulder, chin tucked to your chest, left shoulder covering the left side of the face.

    3. Keep the arm straight and the punch will be faster and have more snap.

    4. The jab like a snake striking, as fast as it goes out, it comes right back. Snap, snap snap.

    5. Remember that the jab is both offensive and defensive. It can be used to strike, set up another punch, maintain distance or bust the face of the guy rushing in.

    6. As for the comments here, heed the helpful, ignore the idiots.

    7. Absolutely find a gym or trainer. Don't be intimidated. Everyone was a beginner once.

You forgot one very important thing to keep in mind:

As fast as you throw your jab out there, you have to get it back to your gaurd position just as fast. After practicing double & triple jabs, then try this:

When you know your gonna throw a left hook off your jab, bring the jab back only 1/2 way to the gaurd position & then immediately throw the left hook from there.

    Catch 'em by surprise!:bbb

If your goal is to have a heavy jab as an offensive weapon ala Holmes and Liston, make sure you aim for the back of the head through the face. Also keep in mind that a jab to the body is quite an effective weapon as well. Please find a good trainer soon. And good luck!:good

What is the proper way to throw a jab? Not asking how to throw a punch on an Internet message board would be a good start.

Seriously though, the jab should be stiff. There should be no "cocking" of the arm\shoulder, as the punch should come straight out. You should also shift your body weight to your front foot to add extra power and make sure you snap your punch like any other. Bring the jab back quick to your defensive position. Keep your free hand up to protect your chin and your elbow tucked into your ribs. Always try to keep your chin tucked into your chest.

That is what I was taught anyways. Seriously though, find a good gym and a trainer to teach you properly. What works for one person, may not work for another. Everybody has their own personal style and physical ability.

Look at a piston cam or steam engine wheel. Then move your arm like that.

    -- start in your stance
-- start straightening your arm (elbow down) (98% of distance)
-- (almost at the same time) step the forward foot a few inches/cms (if needed) to "close"
-- finish stepping BEFORE you land
-- at the last moment rotate your fist down (optional)
-- straighten your arm ONLY 98% do NOT hyper extend!!!
-- bring your fist back FAST along the same straight path
-- move your head, repeat (double jab), follow up (straight, hook, etc), or move out of range.

Remember if going to the body your entire body goes down at the KNEE changing levels, not your hand!!! You can fudge it depending on your opponent and reach, but if you mess up... ouch!

when I throw the jab, it is not a strong or stiff punch. your arm should be a little loose but not completely wobbly. it's a little hard to explain it on a board but your left Hand should be eye level and you snap your jab out without twisting your foot or anything. then return it to about eye level. try doing tripple and double jabs, and follow it with a hook or a right cross. I would join a gym to learn it because you most likely will NOT have it right by the time you read all these posts.
a jab for me keeps a man off balance and scores points. however if you put power behind your shoulder like a hammer it will eventually put a dent/cut in your opponents facial area. it is my least powerful punch but my most used at the same time.
    good luck.
