Prime Mike Tyson perhaps? Relentless pressure, fast, hard, accurate combination puncher with good technique not to mention great defense. If we're talking about a young prime Tyson in a MW body I think he would had the best chance of stopping a prime Jones jr.

The other consideration would be the wear and tear factor of fighting better fighters. Roy was rarely asked to absorb much in his fights. Hardly at all. When it was time to absorb a little for 12 rounds, it was only Ruiz and Tarver that administered the punches. Hardly godzillas in the punching department and being asked to absorb from those 2 for 24 rounds really isn't asking much at all. But yet there was wear and tear on the guy and he was not as sharp. Fighting a guy like an Ezzard Charles or Qawi or Mike Spinks or McClellan even changes that absorption factor. And Makes it happen faster. And I think he lost a lot of balance and snap off his punches from Ruiz and Tarver. Other guys drag him down worse and set the table for future losses by multiple fighters because of the deterioration.

Usually it was a case of the youth of Jones against old reflexes in his fights. When he lost to Tarver and Johnson, they were contemporaries and not 24 year olds. He'd be vulnerable to youth because of that absorption factor coupled with youthful reflexes. If he was the old guy fighting the young guy.

So you need a couple of subtractions earlier than Ruiz and Tarver 1.

I honestly think if Toney wasn't so weight drained and if the fight took place at LHW.. it would've been a much closer fight and Toney could have the style to beat Roy... He is basically counter punching personified.... Sans that... I would think Spinks would have a good chance.. same with Ezz... Same with Joe.. For me though.. give me Pernell Whitaker in a LHW body and he beats Roy more times than not.

Popped into my head whilst driving home from work listening to sean paul

If anyone can time a guy and make him pay whilst giving away every conceivable athletic advantage, it's marquez

I'd settle 4 a somewhat slimmer Montell Griffin with James Toney height .

It would have to be a Joe Frazier type. Someone with a big punch who bore forward and could take a punch.

i disagree about toney. the fight may have been closer but jones was a far superior fighter back then. that's saying something because toney is one of the most skilled fighters in recent years. spinks, foster, and charles would all be tough fights. when you say joe, i'm not sure if you're referring to calzaghe. he shouldn't be mentioned with any of the other fighters here. prime jones would have destroyed joe.

lol this is interesting. You'd have to favor Toney if their condition was reversed.

  12. A bigger ''Marquez equivalent'' would probably get drilled, that style can overcome practically anything apart from a fleet of foot athlete like Roy.

Marquez has always struggled with boxers, though sometimes a fighter who lunges in like Jones had the tendency to do might start putting himself in harms way.

Can't think of any Roy type fighters that Marquez was actually in with though.
