Mike Tyson is another who didn’t reach his potential by most peoples’ figuring but his fanbois just give him a pass on losses by attaching an imaginary asterisk and claiming those don’t count. He was actually undefeated, lol.

I don’t have a vendetta against him. I just don’t think he belongs in every fantasy matchup with every single ATG whoever lived

Never a vendetta. We love them all just that athletes have improved over the decades including boxers. Swimmers and runners it’s easy you have the clock which shows definitively constant improvement over the years. But we do have video and the tale of the tape for sports that aren’t decided just by the stop watch. In football and basketball fans know the athletes are better now then they ever were. For some reason though many older boxing fans grasp to the nostalgia they feel and can’t see what’s obvious to the rest of us. Boxers like all athletes have improved. It’s gradual and not 100% for instance I always wonder how Louis would have done against the 60s heavyweights. I think he would have had tougher competition then he did but he still could have beaten them all except Ali and Liston.

Come on man. He was an ugly person inside and out.

The double standard has more to do with Tua being a fan favorite then having a vendetta against Tony Galento. Large majorities on this site consistantly pick Tua to beat fighters he probably wouldn't have beaten.

I actually think people give Galento a pass for everything. On a thread about his ranking a while back people generally accepted the Nova win at face value. Galento was a size bully who used dirty tactics to beat smaller men and if ever someones accomplishments needed to be taken with a grain of salt its this guy.

The way this works is the improvement happens quickly in the first few eras then tapers off as theres less tactics to learn. You have the most room to improve at the start.

"In football and basketball fans know the athletes are better now then they ever were."

Those fans are arrogant jerkoffs. Wilt Chamberlain is an objectively better athlete than anyone playing today so some of these knuckleheads think his existence was a conspiracy. The main reason the average basketball and football player is better is because those sports are more popular than they used to be. This explosion in popularity was accompanied by expansion which splits the talent more ways. But boxing has the opposite situation at least in the US. The sort of athletes who went into boxing in the 30s,40s and 60s would never dream of going into the sport today.

In like the 1910s the only major team sports were baseball and hockey. These sports were also segregated. While boxing couldn't be fully because of its international nature. So boxing was getting the best of the best. Today they are not.

I have no axe to grind re Tony Gelato.

    A biopic is in order.

    Who gets to play him?

Andy Ruiz Jr with the tatts CGI’d out, maybe?
