    Orlando Canizales seemed to have an off night vs Billy Hardy in their 1st meeting.

    Jimmy Paul was flat as a pancake vs Greg Haugen, he once said all those tough 15 round fights in a row took it out of him.

    Jeff Chandler seemed flat vs Richie Sandoval aswell.

    RJJ fight against Montell Griffin. It was his first *loss *and he couldn't quite seem to work him out. Then when he finally nails him, he gets himself disq!
    The rematch was back to business of course.
    But Montell showed how good he was beating the great James Toney, not once but twice.

    Maybe not his worse performance but Joe Frazier in his first fight with Oscar Bonavena. Young Joe got himself dropped twice and struggled with Oscar. The result was a split decision.
    Could have been Frazier s first defeat.

    Nigel Benn looked on his way to a world title shot, blasting out oppenent s left, right and centre.
    But taking on the little known, Michael Watson, proved to be an error.
    Benn tried pummelling Watson in to the ground but using his excellent boxing skills, he covered up, countered Benn and kod him with a jab.
    Pity there was no rematch.

    Can we say La Starza was Marciano s worse performance?
    Split decision win, tried his hardest to put him down but just couldn't finish him.

    To be fair Fergy I don't think that was an off night, it was a fantastic fight and Benn still had the same intensity and will to win. It was just Watson at that stage in Benn's career, was a bit too clever and cute for him. Benn realized after that fight he couldn't KO everyone, and it was a good learning experience for Benn.

    Yes, mate your right about Benn learning from that fight. He did improve the go on to beat Dewitt.
    And I'll say he did it again, after losing to Eubank.
    He came back at Super middle and kept the title for a few years.

    I think Watson surprised everyone that night as much as Benn.
    He was brilliant.
    Liked to have seen a rematch but fate steps in.

    I think Watson was even better vs Eubank in their 2nd fight, until that fateful uppercut in the 11th round.

    All 3 of those fighters Benn, Eubank, Watson, seemed to improve moving up to 168.

    Agreed, I watched some Zarate fights recently including the Gomez fight and he looked just a bit off. Later after the fight I'd heard rumors that Carlos had the flu or something like it. Of course all fighters will give excuses but I kinda think this one may have been valid. Gomez may have had his number anyway but I believe that just wasn't the big Z's best effort

    The problem was Gomez is one of the greatest Super Bantamweights of all time, and Zarate is one of the greatest Bantamweights of all time.

    But in this case it was fought at Gomez's best weight, and as we've seen over the years. Just moving up 1 weight class can make a difference, Gomez himself moving up to Featherweight wasn't as effective.

    Zarate also had alot of problems making the weight, he struggled to make the weight 4 times I believe until he finally made it.

    it was a huge surprise to me, because up until that point, I was saying of Benn, that he is the kind of MW that can mix with & damage HW's (Old School Grit), but the Watson fight was a real shocker... BUT, it too proved an Old FACT!

    that Good & Worthy Contenders 'given' the Chance are Just As Good or in Some Cases BETTER.

    as was the absolutely Beautiful Boxer, MICHAEL WATSON... he might well have been Britain's Greatest Ever Middleweight, he IS Certainly One of them.

    He stunned us all. Benn was an animal but so raw. Watson played the perfect game.

    Chandler certainly wasn't himself that night, not even a shadow of it. There were rumors of the fast lane and he'd actually been done for coke a few years prior. He was dead in the water that fight.
